MetLife Stadium to host Copa America matches; Finals possible

E. RUTHERFORD, N.J. – MetLife Stadium will host Copa America Centenario matches next June, event organizers announced today.

“We are honored that Copa America Centenario has selected the New York/New Jersey region for this historic event that will showcase MetLife Stadium as a world-class venue for sports and entertainment,” said Brad Mayne, President and CEO of MetLife Stadium.  “These games will be an unforgettable experience for the fans.”

The 16-team tournament featuring the USA, Mexico, Costa Rica, Jamaica, all ten teams from CONMEBOL and two other teams from CONCACAF will be held across ten sites in the United States from June 3-26 2016.

While organizers have not announced a location for the final, ESPN FC reported last week that MetLife Stadium would be hosting the final.

The other nine sites for the tournament are:

• Levi’s Stadium, Santa Clara, CA

• Soldier Field, Chicago

• Gillette Stadium, Foxborough, MA

• NRG Stadium, Houston

• Citrus Bowl, Orlando

• Rose Bowl, Pasadena, CA

• Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia

• University of Phoenix Stadium, Phoenix

• CenturyLink Field, Seattle

US Soccer will serve as the local organizing committee for the tournament. They selected ten sites out of a possible 24 candidates all meeting a minimum stadium capacity of 60,000. Organizers said ticket information will be released in the next coming weeks.

“These 10 cities and venues will provide a fantastic setting for fans across the world to attend Copa America Centenario and allow them to see the amazing passion for soccer in the United States,” U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati said. “The participating teams and fans will be treated to a first-class environment in each city and stadium, adding to the world-class talent that will be competing on the field. We are looking forward to working closely with all of the cities and venues in hosting this prestigious event and creating an extraordinary experience for fans.”
