New York Red Bulls winger Mike Grella had hernia surgery last week and is recovering at home, according to a post on Instagram. The news came with little notice as Grella was not often mentioned as being injured late in the season.

Grella finished his second year with New York, playing a bit more of a diminished role with players like Daniel Royer getting starts after joining the team. Still, the former Leeds man made 32 appearances and scored seven goals in MLS competition. He was an important part of the team’s success as a starter early on and influential later in the season when his role became that of a substitute.

As of now, Mike Grella appears to be a part of the 2017 team for New York. However, there is an expectation that the Red Bulls will make some moves. Players like Aurelien Collin are in the midst of contract issues that could influence decisions in other areas. Also, Grella could be available for expansion draft selection for incoming teams in Minnesota and Atlanta.
