New York Red Bulls winger Mike Grella has been notably absent this preseason, and now we know why.

The Red Bulls revealed that Grella has undergone a successful scope of his left knee. Grella is expected to be back in training within the month.

Grella battled injury in 2016, including having hernia surgery just before Thanksgiving. This would be the second procedure the 30-year old will have had since the off-season.

Even with those issues, Grella is expected to be a major part of the New York Red Bulls’ season. Despite finding himself in a competition for playing time with Daniel Royer towards the end of the season, Grella was able to make himself an indispensable part of the team scoring seven goals over 32 appearances.

Little is known about the injury and whether or not it was a lingering one or occurred during off-season workouts. Still, Grella’s health will now be a major point of interest heading into the 2017 season.
