Former New York Red Bulls Head Coach Mike Petke appears to be heading back behind the bench in 2017, joining USL team Real Monarchs SLC according to RSL commentator and Sirius XM host Brian Dunseth.

Petke, a Supporters Shield winning coach on the MLS level, last coached a pro team in 2014 when he took the New York Red Bulls to the Eastern Conference Final. Despite his list of accolades, Petke faced a messy dismissal as new Sporting Director Ali Curtis surprised everyone, hiring Jesse Marsch as the team’s head coach for the 2015 season.

Petke was one of the more successful head coaches in the team’s history, winning 34 out of 82 MLS matches in his first ever run as a head coach. He captured the Supporters Shield in his first year.

Since then, Petke has kept himself out of the spotlight. He interviewed for positions with the Jacksonville Armada and St. Louis FC over the years, but has found his first true opportunity in Utah.

The Real Monarchs are owned and operated by Real Salt Lake of MLS. The team has had lackluster results in their two seasons of existence, unable to make the playoffs or have a record over the .500 mark. Real Salt Lake is known for having one of the better academy systems in MLS and the team’s inability to produce on the field has left the front office staff searching for answers. Mike Petke joins the team having experience with New York Red Bulls’ academy system which has now produced a USL Championship team, as well as with his youth development work as the New Jersey ODP Youth Soccer Director of Coaching.
