Minnesota, several others eye Cosmos coach Savarese

Fans of the New York Cosmos know what Head Coach and Team Sporting Director Giovanni Savarese has meant to the club since joining them in 2013.

Apparently, MLS teams have taken notice as well.

Per SI.com’s Grant Wahl, the two-time Soccer Bowl championship winning coach is reportedly a coaching target for former NASL club, Minnesota United.

EoS can independently confirm the report.

But the interest in Savarese does not stop there. As mentioned in the SI piece, Savarese was considered a candidate for the Houston Dynamo job prior to their hiring of Wilmer Cabrera. Likewise, the Seattle Sounders also weighed the idea of taking on Savarese for the 2017 season. In fact, EoS has learned that there are several other MLS teams interested in Savarese’s services. There has also been some overseas interest as well.

Currently, Savarese is expected to man the helm for the Cosmos next season. However, sources tell us the team will not stand in his way if a high-profile offer lures the Venezuelan away from the club.

While that decision might raise concerns, it is intended as a nod to Savarese’s hard work with the organization. Aside from his two Soccer Bowl trophies, Savarese has also added two Fall Championships, a Spring title and has led his team to the top of the combined table this year.

It is also an homage to his unique player philosophy, where Savarese has consistently stood out of the way of outgoing players seeking better deals for their respective careers.
