Out of favor Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger will not be heading for the New York Red Bulls according to Red Bull head of global soccer Oliver Mintzlaff.

“Schweinsteiger is a great player who has had an amazing career,” said Mintzlaff to the Bild. “But there are no talks. He is not an issue for us and he will not become an issue.”

New Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho made it clear before the start of the Premier League season that Schweinsteiger was not in his plans. Since then, speculation has run rampant as to where the World Cup winner would end up and MLS has been brought up multiple times.

“We would welcome Bastian with open arms,” said MLS Commissioner Don Garber during a trip to Germany. “He would be a leader for many of our young players.”

New York Red Bulls are currently maxed out of designated players with MLS listing Sacha Kljestan, Omer Damari and Gonzalo Veron as the team’s DPs. On top of that, several players who would normally be in DP range are currently being paid down with allocation money including Dax McCarty and Bradley Wright-Phillips.
