MLS Offseason Notebook: Revs, Rapids sign DPs, more

Rapids Shkelzen Gashi

Revs sign Xavier Kouassi: The New England Revolution have signed a designated player in Ivorian midfielder Xavier Kouassi. Kouassi, 26, has spent most of his club career in Switzerland, most recently with FC Sion. He has made 51 appearances for the club since 2013, and been its captain through the current Europa League campaign.

Rapids sign Shkelzen Gashi: Also arriving from the Swiss SuperLeague is Albanian forward Shkelzen Gashi, who has signed a designated player contract with the Colorado Rapids. Gashi has scored 25 goals in 41 games for Champions League regulars FC Basel. He scored for Albania in a European qualifier last March, but has only made two appearances since.

Blas Perez traded to Vancouver: The Vancouver Whitecaps have acquired veteran striker Blas Perez from Dallas in exchange for the rights to Mauro Rosales. Perez had 35 goals over the past four seasons with Dallas, earning himself a reputation as a hardnosed, nuisance of a striker. Perez will turn 35 in March, and was often coming off the bench late for Dallas last season.

Whitecaps sign Fraser Aird on loan: The Vancouver Whitecaps will have the services of 20-year-old Canadian international Frasier Aird, on loan from Scottish giant Rangers. Aird has spent his entire club career with the former Scottish giants, who currently play in the second tier. At Rangers, Aird was a teammate of former Whitecap Kenny Miller, who swayed him towards joining Vancouver.

Columbus signs Amro Tarek on loan: Egyptian-American defender Amro Tarek has signed with Columbus Crew SC on loan from Real Betis. Tarek has bounced around in Europe, but at 23 has yet to make a senior-level appearance in the major leagues of Europe.
