Fresh off of a plate of crow, I come back for potentially seconds as I revisit the kind of bold predictions made about the Western Conference.

Chivas USA

Chivas USA LogoChivas USA has gotten worse during the year.

However, judging from the reaction to those who have seen it, their on the field issues are about to pale in comparison to the off the field issues exposed by Real Sports.

Preseason Prediction: Juan Agudelo leaves in the summer.

Result so far: He left in the spring.

Colorado Rapids

Colorado Rapids logoMuch like the Revolution in the East, the Rapids are slowly ascending the Western Conference on the back of a five game unbeaten run.

The pieces are coming together for Colorado especially in defense with a front seven that should get more plaudits than it normally gets. Clint Irwin and Chris Klute the standout players.

Preseason Prediction: The Rapids fade in the final six weeks.

Result so far: I still maintain that prediction but don’t be surprised if Colorado’s fade is more opaque.

FC Dallas

FC Dallas logoAfter winning four of the first five games, FC Dallas have fallen off going winless in eight straight games. They have not scored a goal this month and have fallen from first to fifth in the West.

Preseason Prediction: Dallas trades for a depth winger.

Result so far: Dallas signed Mauro Diaz to essentially move David Ferrera back out wide and added to their holding midfield depth with the signing of Erick. Expect to see both fully integrated into the team during the early part of August.

LA Galaxy

LA Galaxy logoThe Galaxy keep going along steadily despite their constant of flux throughout the early part of the year. Mike Magee helped greatly before the return of Landon Donovan made him expendable and Robbie Rogers is beginning to come into his own much like he was before leaving MLS in 2011.

Preseason Prediction: Landon Donovan’s absence will cost the Galaxy the Supporters Shield.

Result so far: The Galaxy are four points behind Real Salt Lake for the Supporters Shield and it would be unfair to go out on a limb and blame Donovan as of right now.

Portland Timbers

Portland Timbers LogoIt felt that there would be something good brewing for Portland this season. Whether or not it would come together for a good season this year was the question.

Apparently it has come together a bit quicker than expected.

Preseason Prediction: The Timbers will finish the season strong.

Result so far: Remains to be seen, obviously but so far so good.

Real Salt Lake

Real Salt Lake LogoJason Kreis and Garth Lagerway should be commended for remodeling a good squad from 2012 into a great squad in 2013. Something I was unsure about. They continue to add, having acquired Brandon McDonald from DC to shore up a lack of depth at centerback created by Kwame Watson-Siriboe’s season ending injury.

Preseason Prediction: Robbie Findley scores 7-10 goals.

Result so far: Findley has five so far. He’ll likely get to that benchmark but not over it as RSL has other options including the exciting Olmes Garcia.

San Jose Earthquakes

San Jose Earthquakes logoIt was surprising only in the fact that he was last year’s coach of the year but Frank Yallop’s firing made perfect sense for San Jose. A team that was expected to contend in the West had only won three games at that point. They have won three games since then but are still eight points out of a playoff spot.

Preseason Prediction: San Jose wins Supporters Shield.

Result so far: Mmmm crow.

Seattle Sounders

Seattle Sounders logoThe addition of Obafemi Martins is what the Sounders had in mind for their third attack minded DP but a lack of finishing has provided moments of frustration for the club. Martins has six goals in 12 games which is fine but the entire team has 22 goals in 18 games. Fortunately for Seattle, they have played the least amount of games and statistically speaking, finishing issues usually sort themselves out in the end.

Preseason Prediction: Seattle gets knocked out by Tigres.

Result so far: The combination of YouTube quality goals from DeAndre Yedlin and Djimi Traore and a red card to Manuel Viniegra proved otherwise.

Vancouver Whitecaps

Vancouver Whitecaps logoCamilo’s 13 goals obviously are what is leading the Whitecaps but this is a solid corp of players that Martin Rennie has assembled in Vancouver. Another attacking midfield option would give the Whitecaps added security going forward.

Preseason Prediction: Vancouver will qualify for the Champions League.

Result so far: A tough loss on away goals in the Canadian Championship means no Champions League for the best team north of the border.

Kind of Bold Standings:

1. San Jose (8)

2. Sounders (7)

3. Galaxy (3)

4. RSL (1)

5. Vancouver Whitecaps (4)

6. FC Dallas (5)

7. Colorado (6)

8. Portland (2)

9. Chivas (9)
