Moffat blast pushes Cosmos past Ventura County

VENTURA, CA. — An Adam Moffat blast from 25 yards out is all the New York Cosmos would need to beat the Ventura County Fusion, securing the Green Thumb Classic trophy.

The former Houston Dynamo midfielder managed space in the 15th minute, firing home a shot past Fusion keeper Mike Beigarten for the game winner.

“First of all, we really appreciate the way we’ve been treated here in Ventura by the Fusion over the past few days,” Cosmos head coach Giovanni Savarese said after the game. “[This was] a match in which I thought we did a lot of good things. We were able to give minutes to some guys who didn’t get a lot of playing time in Hong Kong and I think offensively we were able to create a lot of chances. We could have done a better job capitalizing on those chances, but I think we’re showing that offensively we have more resources than we did in the past.”

The Cosmos side were captained by Hagop Chirishian — a former member of Ventura County and part of their USL Premier Development League championship team in 2009.  Trialist Brian Holt received the nod at keeper, with Hunter Gorskie and Samuel Caceres at center back, Jimmy Mulligan on the right, and David Diosa on the left of defense.  Adam Moffat played the lone defensive midfielder role, flanked by Andres Flores and Chirishian, with Lucky Mkosana leading the front line alongside Leo Fernandes and Walter Restrepo.

“This was a good thing for me,” said Mkosana of his start. “The nice thing was that the coaching staff just let me go out and play my game. I received a lot of motivation from them.”

Sebastian Guenzatti, Dennis Chin and Danny Szetela came off the bench for the Cosmos late, but it was Spanish striker Raul who awoke the crowd with his insertion into the match.  For his part, Raul played a withdrawn role but still managed a quick and dangerous shot in the area during extra time.

“It was quality experience for all of us,” said Mkosana. “It feels good to get the win out here in California.”

The Cosmos now look forward to this Saturday when they visit Bonney Field to take on the hottest team in USL, the Sacramento Republic.  Kickoff is slated for 10 p.m. ET.
