Palace, Stoke join Mönchengladbach in hunt for U.S. defender Fabian Johnson

U.S. National Team defender Fabian Johnson is in hot demand.

The pursuit of the German-American has intensified after Hoffenheim boss Markus Gisdol candidly admitted Johnson would be leaving the club. “He has turned down our offer to sign a new contract,” Gisdol told “Since summer we tried hard to keep Fabian at our club. However he has now decided to join another club.”

While German publication Kicker claims there is “no doubt” Johnson would sign with Borussia Mönchengladbach this summer, England’s “Mirror” also reveals interest from two Premiership sides; pro-American Stoke City and mid-table Crystal Palace.

Johnson has been a steadfast part of Hoffenheim since joining from Wolfsburg in 2011, appearing in 73 matches and notching five goals and 13 assists. He has also been a visible and powerful part of the U.S. Men’s National Team, featuring both as a left midfielder and left back throughout the team’s run towards World Cup qualification.

Mönchengladbach has been loosely connected with the defender since late last year and offers Johnson plenty of other incentives besides playing time. Currently fifth in the Bundesliga tables, Mönchengladbach sits six points from a UEFA birth. As they stand, the team can qualify for Europe League competition. As for the English sides, only Crystal Palace has registered as a potential landing place for the U.S. fullback prior to these reports.

Johnson is currently nursing a broken left hand suffered during a 4-0 loss to FC Nürnberg on January 25th. He has, however, featured as an unused sub in the club’s last two league matches.
