On Sunday evening, the U.S. Soccer Federation released the preliminary 40-man roster for the Copa America Centenario.

The roster features a combination of veterans mixed in with young players looking to get their first major tournament experience.

Borussia Dortmund forward Christian Pulisic highlights the influx of youth into the player pool. The 17-year-old has two goals on eight appearances in 2016 for the German club.

The roster also includes several players from the U-23 Olympic team including striker Jordan Morris, goalie Ethan Horvath, and defenders Matt Miazga and Kellyn Acosta.

One surprise inclusion was Eric Lichaj of Nottingham Forest. The defender was a consistent selection during following the 2010 FIFA World Cup. However, the Illinois native has only received two call-ups since 2011, and none since 2013.

Of local interest is the inclusion of NYCFC’s Mix Diskerud, who despite a poor outing in the last round of qualifying finds himself in position to represent the United States this summer.

Rounding out the roster are the usual suspects in Jozy Altidore, Michael Bradley, Clint Dempsey, Alejandro Bedoya, Jermaine Jones, Fabian Johnson, and Tim Howard.

Left of the roster is Brek Shea, Gedion Zelalem, Emerson Hyndman and goalie Will Yarbrough. Aron Johannsson and Rubio Rubin will not be featured in this summer’s tournament as they recover from injuries.

The 40-man roster must be trimmed to 23 by May 20, which is just four days after camp opens in Miami for the European and Mexican based players.

Copa America Centenario gets underway on June 3rd.
