Yesterday was a day of highs and lows in New York soccer. For starters, someone must be reading “Empire of Soccer” as the U.S.S.F. have finally decided to let Red Bull Arena host a Men’s National Team game at the “Cathedral,” 18 months after the New York Red Bulls broke ground. Ecuador will play the foil in this historic match up which will take place on October 11th at 7pm.
That’s the good news. On the other hand, the early morning was consumed with the angst of Red Bull fans, not from yet another disappointing result, but by an untimely release of the teams 2012 ticket pricing strategy. The boys over at the Viper’s Nest broke down the various increases and nuances of the multi (multi multi multi) tiered ticket pricing strategy.
When looking at the ticket pricing strategy as a whole, the average increase is 1% across the board, with 71% of seats decreasing in price. However, when investigated further, it seems that the more expensive midfield seats are the ones carrying the majority of the increase on their backs (sections 125 – 127 ‘front’ have increased 52.8% year over year).
The Red Bulls introduced new tiered membership cards with perks for those that sign on by September 30th (18 days from the ticket renewal announcement) as well. The convoluted system, following one of the worst results of the teams season, has caused quite a stir from the fan base, and has been the talk of the supporters for the past 24 hours. Check out the Viper’s Nest for the breakdown, and click here for the Red Bulls online STH pamphlet.
There is plenty to catch up on this week, so let’s dive right in to this weeks ‘New York Minute.”
24 under 24
To start the hype leading to today’s “expert picks” reveal, MLS has held a week long vote on Facebook to ask the fans what they thought. Brek Shea (F.C. Dallas) took the number one spot, with Juan Agudelo coming in second, followed by Freddy Adu (Union), Teal Bunbury (Sporting) and Steve Zakuani (Sounders).
Tim Ream did not crack the top 24.
Cosmos Legend Franz Beckenbauer Visits The Freedom Tower
German paper “Bild” was given the unique opportunity to visit the in-construction ‘Freedom Tower’ on the World Trade Center site with Cosmos legend Franz Beckenbauer. He was given the distinct honor of signing his name on the cast iron skeleton of the 71st floor of the building. The love Beckenbauer feels for the city is palpable in this beautifully put together interview. I highly recommend you click the link and give this one a read.
RED BULLS UPDATE

I think it is safe to say goodbye to the Red Bulls ‘Official’ blog. Not updated since July 25th (the last time New York player Dallas), the Reader has been cast out into obscurity. The revamped NewYorkRedBulls.com doesn’t even have a mention of the site. Not, the Red Bull organization hasn’t made any official announcement’s about the blogs closing, but like so many other links on the internet, it seems they have chosen to let it live out a slow and painful death.
