The North American Soccer League made a significant upgrade in the match ball department Tuesday morning with the announcement that it has partnered up with sports apparel giant Under Armour to provide a custom-designed ball for the league starting this year.

EoS first broke the news in January.

NASL players began training with Under Armour’s Desafio model this offseason and the response has been positive so far. The Desafio will be utilized as the official match ball, in training and in community events held by clubs across the league.

“Under Armour has quickly become a major player in the global soccer scene, and we believe that this partnership will benefit all who are involved in the game both here and abroad,” said NASL Commissioner Bill Peterson. “When our players and coaches got their feet on the Under Armour Desafio ball for the first time, the responses were great. It’s a fantastic ball.”

Quality of the match ball aside, cozying up with a company with the profile of Under Armour is a major win for Peterson and the NASL as they look to upgrade their sponsorship portfolio and entice more investment in the league.

Based in Baltimore, Under Armour has become an influential force in soccer around the globe in recent years. The company is the kit provider for for Tottentham Hotspur FC in in England’s Premier League, FC St. Pauli in the Bundesliga and Brazilian powerhouse Sao Paulo FC. Under Armour already has deep roots in the U.S., with considerable partnerships with the NFL and many NCAA Football programs across the country.

“Under Armour is proud to support a professional organization such as the NASL as the League’s Official Ball Partner. Together, we will continue to help grow the sport of soccer in North America,” said Peter Murray, VP of Sports Marketing, Under Armour.

The new NASL match ball will lose the signature blue stars that past balls in both the modern and original era prominently displayed. However, the new ball will feature the NASL logo and will maintain the colors of red and blue.

Voit has served as the exclusive match ball manufacturer for the NASL over the past two season.
