Wright, Neeskens highlight five Cosmos cuts; Bover, Moffat to return

The New York Cosmos have announced their first roster moves following the 2015 NASL Championship winning season.

Promising young American forward Haji Wright leads a group of five players cut from the club. NPSL Cosmos B captain John Neeskens, keeper Keasel Broome, loanee Kharlton Belmar and Samuel Caceres will not be part of the 2015 Cosmos.

Meanwhile, the team announced extension deals for midfielders Sebastian Guenzatti, Adam Moffat, David Diosa and Ruben Bover. Backup keep Kyle Zebeck will also return to the club.

“We have a lot of talent here at the Cosmos, but we’re always looking to strengthen our squad,” Head Coach and Sporting Director Giovanni Savarese said in a club statement. “I’m extremely proud of what this team was able to accomplish last season. Now we are ready to build for 2016.”

Moffat, 29,had his season cut short due to injuries, appearing in 20 matches with just 12 starts. However, he will be expected to play a larger role with the team come next season. ¬†Guenzatti, 24, has been a part of the club since their inception. Last season, he scored four goals in 23 appearances. Diosa, 22, is also a Cosmos’ original, but was used sparingly during the 2015 season. Meanwhile, former Red Bull Ruben Bover, 23, continues his stay in New York after carving a niche for himself in the first team late last season.

Leo Fernandes has lived out the life of his Philadelphia Union loan deal, but the club are attempting to extend his stay with the Cosmos. Discussions are also ongoing with forward Gaston Cellerino, Hagop Chirishian, Hunter Gorskie, Jimmy Mulligan and Brian Holt.

And as reported on EoS, Walter Restrepo has been given permission to explore the free agent market.

The only one here I wonder about is Wright. Why let him go? I think he has a solid future. The rest I don’t have a problem with, most of them barely played.
