It has been nearly 30 years since the New York Cosmos have fielded a professional team. By August, it will have been over 30 years since they had faced the Fort Lauderdale Strikers.
On August 3, 2013, that all changes.
The new Cosmos era is set to begin with a match against an old foe. Hofstra University will once again play the home turf as the Cosmos host the Strikers in Long Island.
“We’re thrilled to return to the playing field against our historic rivals and take this first step towards returning to the top and delivering the New York Cosmos to the stature and prominence they deserve,” Cosmos COO Erik Stover said. “We’ve been working as hard as we can to put together the best possible club and we’re excited to see this team take the field.”
These two teams last met on May 8th 1983; the final year the Strikers would participate in the NASL. On that day, the host Cosmos took the victory 3-2 after suffering a 4-1 loss to Fort Lauderdale days prior. On August 14th, 1977, both clubs met in the heat of a New York summer to set a then attendance record at Giants Stadium of 77,691. The playoff encounter ended with the Cosmos steamrolling Fort Lauderdale 8-3. New York also took the 1980 Soccer Bowl (their fourth and final league cup) against their Southern foes in a 3-0 victory.
For fans of nostalgia, this particular match – from the rivalry itself to the grounds of Hofstra – will certainly be a throw back to a different time.
Along with their announcement, the Cosmos have also released season ticket package information on their site (CLICK HERE FOR MORE). Season tickets range from $96 to $224 per seat with an all inclusive club seat package available at $680 per seat.

Can’t wait for the San Antonio game. They are a respectable team on and off the field. I would’ve gone to a Puerto Rico match as well, but they won’t play until next year unfortunately.
