The New York Cosmos have announced the signing of three players to the squad Friday morning in defender Hunter Gorskie and goalkeepers Jimmy Maurer and Chad Calderone.

Jimmy Maurer’s name may be a familiar one to New York Red Bull fans. The goalkeeper was a 4th round, 2011 supplemental draft choice for the team but never managed to feature in New York. He played with Universidad de Concepción in the Chilean Primera Division last season, and prior to that, with NASL side Atlanta Silverbacks.

“Jimmy has a lot of experience for his age. He’s very reliable with good composure and demeanor in the net,” Cosmos head coach Giovanni Savarese said.

Hunter Gorskie, 22, is a Marlboro, NJ native who recently trialed with the San Jose Earthquakes. “Hunter is a versatile defender who helps solidify the depth we plan to have on our team,” Savarese said. “He is a hard worker that I expect will grow well with the Cosmos.” The Stanford graduate was the team’s captain during his senior season. He accumulated 68 appearances over his college tenure and, previous to that, was in the US National Team’s U-18 player pool.

Rounding out the local flavor is a veteran of the New York Soccer scene – goalkeeper Chad Calderone. The big 31 year old Baldwin, Long Island native has been a staple for various clubs in the region – most notably the New York Pancyprian-Freedoms of the Cosmopolitan Soccer League. “Chad is one of the best keepers in New York City and we’re excited for him to join New York’s team,” Savarese said.

Like teammate Dane Murphy, he also played for the Cosmos U-23 team and featured in the club’s 2011 match against Manchester United in the Paul Scholes Testimonial.

The team’s roster now consists of 14 players. During a question and answer session with Cosmos legend Carlos Alberto, Savarese mentioned in passing that they have 15 players under contract thus far. They plan on holding a roster of 22-24 players for the Fall NASL Championship.
