UPDATE: New York Cosmos Begin A Week Long Asian Tour

While Major League Soccer clubs prepare for the 2011 season, the New York Cosmos continue to work towards the opportunity to take part in one. Late last night, Honorary Club President Pelé, Director of Soccer Eric Cantona and Associate Director of Soccer, Cobi Jones touched down in Singapore as they prepared for a nine day trip through Asia (with appearances in Singapore and Hong Kong only). This marked the very first time all three men traveled together as ambassadors for the team; the first of many expected trips over the course of the next two years.

Principal investors, Chairman Paul Kelmsley and Director of Football Terry Byrne, accompanied the trio for what the club dubs its “2011 New York Cosmos Asia Tour.”

And what will this tour be about? Their official press release states that the tour is “defined by a number of activities focused on spreading goodwill through sport, developing young talent, and building global partnerships.” In other words, “publicity, charity work, and big business.”

Here are a few of the highlights for Singapore alone:

1 – They secured a tour sponsor in Singapore, aligning with “Courts,” Singapore’s Largest Electrical, IT and Furniture retailer, who also happens to be the title sponsors of S-League standouts, The Courts Young Lions Football Club. Courts, amongst other contributions, will set up promotional opportunities for the club, including a press conference prior to a Young Lions game, followed by autograph signings and things of that nature. Courts is also footing the bill for a lucky winner to come to New York in June and witness the New York Cosmos 40th Anniversary game (details on the event or the players expected to participate yet to be released).
2 – A Q&A with the American Chamber of Commerce in Singapore, featuring Pele, Cantona and Jones.
3 – A ribbon cutting of a new soccer pitch at the Singapore Sports School.
4 – Cobi Jones will be hosting a soccer clinic with ‘Team Hope,’ an organization dedicated to “Changing Lives Through Football.”
5 – Launch of the Umbro New York Cosmos kit for 2011 in Singapore’s “leading soccer retailer,” Weston.

The “Tour” will continue in Hong Kong from the 6th to the 9th, with Pelé serving as the teams sole Ambassador. Much like Singapore, the Hong Kong trip will focus on goodwill (Pelé will pay a visit to the Hong Kong Football Club), charity work (meeting with “The Crusaders,” a program dedicated to players with special needs, sponsored by Prudential), and big business (Pelé will be speaking to and taking questions from the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong).

For those wondering “Why Singapore and Hong Kong?” keep in mind that some of the wealthiest investors in Asia reside in both regions, respectively. Singapore is known throughout the Pacific for it’s wealthy citizenry, and Hong Kong, though technically under the communist umbrella of China, operates as one of the most capitalistic, business friendly environments in the World, yielding vast numbers of profitable businesses waiting for a tasty opportunity for investment.

Hope that ties things together.
