New York Cosmos: Florida Camp Roundup

The New York Cosmos are home again after spending the past week training in Florida. In that brief trip to the Sunshine State, the club played Miami United FC of the NPSL and Boca Raton FC from the APSL, posting identical 3-0 victories in both maches.

The convincing scorelines show definite progress after the Cosmos lost their previous preseason outing to the San Jose Earthquakes 1-0.

The Scoresheet

Attacker Yasmani Duk was likely the Cosmos player with the most to smile about on his flight back to New York after tallying three of the six goals scored in Florida.

The Bolivian didn’t wait long to make his mark, notching the two opening goals early in the first half against Miami. He also closed out the scoring for the Florida trip with the third goal against Boca Raton — a shot from distance that deflected off a defender and slipped by the keeper.

Last year’s Cosmos-B MVP, Ruben Bover, also got on the board in Florida, with the third goal to finish off Miami. The goal came through a well-worked corner kick sequence that was initiated by Juan Arango and Ayoze.

Andres Flores also found the back of the net, with a little help from Lucky Mkosana. After only a few minutes against Boca Raton, Mkosana did well to fight off a defender from the right edge of the box and pick out an on-running Flores. The Salvadoran finished with pace under heavy pressure from a defender.

The second goal of the Boca Raton match was all Hunter Freeman. The right back buried a 20-yard free kick directly in front of goal.

Takeaways

Starting XI vs. Miami United FC: (4-1-4-1) GK Kyle Zobeck – D Ayoze, Carlos Mendes, Jimmy Ockford, Hunter Freeman – MF Michael Lahoud, Andres Flores, Yohandry Orozco, Ruben Bover, Juan Arango – F Yasmani Duk

Starting XI vs. Boca Raton FC: (4-2-3-1) GK Jimmy Maurer – D Ayoze, Jimmy Ockford, Carlos Mendes, Hunter Freeman – MF Sebastian Guenzatti, Eric Calvillo, Andres Flores, Juan Arango, Gabriel Farfán – F Lucky Mkosana

  • Head Coach Gio Savarese started with a five-man midfield in both matches, but took a more defensive approach with two holding midfielders in the match with Boca Raton. The latter formation was the default throughout most of last year and could likely continue.
  • Savarese also started with identical back lines in both matches. Jimmy Ockford slotted directly into central defense after arriving from the Seattle Sounders and went the full 90 minutes in both matches.
  • Hunter Freeman was back on the right side the back line after a shaky outing at centerback against San Jose, while Savarese gave Gabriel Farfan a run out of the right wing.
  • Veteran centerback Roversio has yet to feature for the Cosmos in preseason action, while new centerback David Ochieng also sat out the Forida matches after joining the team in between the California and Florida trips.
  • While not necessarily a cause for overwhelming concern yet, Juan Arango has had a relatively quite offseason thus far. He was involved with Bover’s goal against Boca Raton, but he has yet to tally a goal or outright assist. Arango has been primarily utilized behind the lone striker up, pulling the strings of the attack. So the true yard stick for his effectiveness this season may be how many chances he creates or his teammates.

    Was this game at Hofstra?

The crowd looks the same, just wondering.

    • slowleftarm

They’re just getting the players used to playing in front of an empty stadium. Looks like they replicated the environment at Shuart pretty well – nice job!

      • William

but even a better job is the great start of the Harrison Metrostars a team no one cares about except u. Take a bow genius.

  • Jomo

    Cosmos fan here….yikes.
How in the world do we expect a stadium plan to be approved?
    I realize it’s a scrimmage in Florida,but
I was at a 5th grade spring concert this weekend with many more people watching.
    This is very depressing.

    • Jake Nutting

This pic is from the closed door scrimmage with Miami United. There was a healthy crowd from the Boca Raton match, but no pictures from that one.

      • slowleftarm

Does that explain the crowds at the lacrosse stadium then? I guess those are closed door games too.

        • William

last time I was Shuart stadium there were 12,500 for the championship game. How was the Harrison Metrostars championship game ? um oh yea it ended the same way as it always does. 20 years of failure.

  • Jomo

If I were the cosmos, I would ask for this story to be pulled immediately.

  • Anthony

The other NY team’s trolls are out in force, not that I blame them, they have nothing good to talk about with their own teams. Thankfully in 3 weeks the NY team that actually wins matches and trophies will be playing.

    • slowleftarm

You mean RBNY (SS winners in 2013 and 2015)? They’re already playing. Unless you’re talking about the NY team that wins minor league trophies – they’re still playing in front of empty houses in Florida in preparation for the empty houses they’ll have in Hempstead.

      • Anthony

What happens first Cosmos a win in three weeks or RBNY scores a goal in 2016? Congrats on winning a trophy a few fans made up because they wanted a participation award. Last i checked the Cosmos have 7 League Championships and you have none.

        • slowleftarm

Cosmos have only been around three years – how do they have seven championships? Or are you counting the ones some old team named Cosmos won 40 years ago in a defunct league?

Someone bragging about minor league championships is calling the supporters shield a participation award? LOL. To win this “participation award” you have to have the most points in the league over the course of a 34 game season. In other words, you have to be the best team to win it. That’s not what a participation award is.

          • slowfrontallobe

If that determines best team then why the playoffs?

It is an award you can shoot for when you know you’re not going all the way.

            • William

Why the 20 years of failures ? its a back in award – because we suck in the playoffs this is a way the Harrison Metrostars management sells it to the fans. It seems the feeble minded Slowleftarm buys it 1000%. Such a shame such an uneducated fan.

              • slowleftarm

So it’s a “back in award” (whatever that means) but you have to have the best record in the league at the end of the season in order to get it? Huh?

                • William

Doesn’t matter its the team that is standing at the end that’s what any team at any level plays for.

          • Anthony

It was created by Sam Piernon of KC Wiz SG in 1999 because fans wanted to crown a champion of the regular season. Its not even an official trophy.

  • Ty/s

Trolls are out in full force today just.

trolls? is that what you fanboys call people coming here telling the truth.

face you clowns are nothing but ostriches wit the way you keep your heads buried in the sand. why cant you come up with a single solitary response as to why the f.cosmos cant draw more than 3000 to shuart stadium?

    #WHERESTHELINKTOTHEF.COSMOSGOFUNDMEPAGE?

    • John Holmes

I find it interesting how Larry & Slow are always commenting on the Cosmos. You would think their own teams were bad enough this weekend that they would be all over those articles like Desiree est on me.

      • Anthony

They talk a big game, but at the end of the day it kills them inside that their clubs are carbon copies of other brands that have zero identity of their own. The are hollow people that follow hollow brand gimmick soccer teams. They deserve each other.

        • Larry\’s a Simpleton

And that’s why Slow & I get together bi-weekly for naked Twister!

          Left foot green, baby!

    • Anthony

Attendance smacking a closed door scrimmage?? That is where you guys have sunk to.

  • Kevin

Amazing how a Cosms scrimmage gets more hits then the other 2 teams actual regular season games.

    • slowleftarm

Amazing that no one can provide a substantive response to people’s comments about Cosmos – because they’re true. They are a minor league team with no fans playing in a college lacrosse stadium. Instead, fanboys criticize people for simply stating the obvious. Maybe you’re right though. Maybe we should be like everyone else on this planet and just ignore the Cosmos.

      • The Don

You are a good servant, my son. You will sit at my right hand when I rule FIFA. NFL soccer will rule the world and you and Larry shall me by Nancy servants. Glory be to the Don and the Sunil and the Holy TAM allocation. As it was in 1996, it shall be forever.

        Amen.

      • slowfrontallobe

Yes troll brother, why DON’T you ignore the Cosmos?

Oh I forgot your mission from Don our Lord to see all Cosmos fans burn in YOUR truth and repent, to acknowledge their true master.

        That and your tiny hands.

  • you are all poor losers, all you can do is to spawn **** on the Cosmos, why do you say that they can’t draw more than 3000 people at hofstra stadium? last year average was 6719, one of the best in Nasl, which is for now a second division but it’s quicky growing and could become a real pain in the ass for the Don in future….second division or not the Cosmos are the ones winning trophies in town and like it or not they are the real new york team and the only one with a real american and legendary brand….and when you say soccer in Usa the answer can be just one: Cosmos!
Just one last question? Who was chosen to play in Cuba last year? and why?
so shut the **** up and bow to the Cosmos you losers

    • Eric B

6719?? They averaged 6859 in fall of 2013, 4962 in 2014, and 5062 in 2015. Which was good for 7th in NASL out of 11, not exactly “one of the best” or “quickly growing”.

      Source: http://www.kenn.com/the_blog/?p=7562

      • slowleftarm

Eric – don’t let facts get in the way of the narrative. Cosmos are a huge global brand that wins big important trophies etc with enormous crowds and a following around the world. NASL is a fast growing league that will one day topple MLS.

Don’t question it by bringing up things like actual attendance or the fact that MLS just cherry picks NASL markets and those teams jump at the chance to move up.

        • Anthony

All you have is attendance smack, its like none of you ever sat around watching MLS in 2004. I was at a Metro playoff game against DC in 2004 where maybe 1000 people showed up. Or RBA when maybe 5000 people came to games. On the field the Cosmos are a wild success, off it they deal with playing in Hofstra in NASL.

          • slowleftarm

Any MLS team would be a bigger “wild success” playing against minor leaguers. Second division trophies don’t mean a thing compared to anything won in MLS.

  • smurf040

These dudes are hilarious! one makes fun of the Cosmos for playing in a Lacrosse field. Like playing soccer at Yankee stadium is any better! rolf! And Redbulls fans (which i’am one by the way) puff their chest out for winning 2 SS in 20 years! ask anyone in MLS from players, reporters, announcers, owners, even ball boys what they would rather have, MLS championship trophies or SS?? I for one would rather have the trophies!! everyone in NY knows that the only way to get recognition in the sports circles is by winning championships! That’ why the Cosmos are top dogs in NY. They bring their fans (whether is 500 or 5,000 of them) Championships! and as a fan, that’s all i want. **** the shields,, I want a Cup! Go NASL! go MLS! go Soccer!

    • Cosmos, let alone the golden age, won two soccer bowls and a woosnam cup in three years, how long did it take to NYRB to win 2 supporters shields (better than nothing anyway)

      • slowleftarm

Pretty sure any team in MLS could have “two soccer bowls and a woosnam cup” if they had played in NASL. You can’t argue the Supporters Shield isn’t a real trophy and then brag about minor league championships.

And I’m not an NYCFC fan but yes, playing at Yankee Stadium is much better than playing at a college lacrosse field. Sure, it’s not a soccer stadium and the sooner they get one the better, but it’s one of the iconic sports venues in the US. It’s a whole lot better than Shuart.

        • William

But they win they won in the 1970’s and 1980’s and they are winning now.

        • Anthony

Yes you can you mong, one is the official championship trophy of a professionally sanctioned soccer league….the other is the Supporters Shield, a trophy created in some nerd’s basement because they were buthurt that MLS didn’t award a single table champion.

          • slowleftarm

Created in some nerd’s basement? The winner gets a champions league place. And, in any event, finishing last in MLS is more impressive than winning any NASL trophy.

You got your boy William bragging about championships won by some other team named Cosmos in a defunct league. You can’t make this up!

            • the Cosmos were and are the Cosmos forever, shut the **** up!!

              • and talking about nowadays, who is the team who won more in these recent years??

                • slowleftarm

Who was the winner at RBA last year? And in terms of league form – RBNY won a trophy that is far harder to win than anything Cosmos have ever won. So I guess the answer to your question is RBNY.

                  • William

and who was the winner the year before ?

                    • slowleftarm

Still bragging about a win over an RBNY reserve team in a game the manager flat out stated he didn’t care about? I guess when you play in a college lacrosse stadium, you have to grasp for anything.

                    • William

I think that’s the major problem you have slowbrain just a hard time coming to grips with reality. Cosmos beat the Harrison Metrostars they beat them like a dead mule. Your current team is a shell of what it used to be which wasn’t that great to begin with – Slowbrain come home.

          • MTF

Kudos to the Cosmos for winning the championship of the league they play in. That’s the goal, but winning the Soccer Bowl and $2.75 gets you a ride on the subway. The Nerd Shield is a ticket to the Champions League, so there’s that. As a Red Bulls fan would I prefer winning MLS Cup? Absolutely. I will say I like the fact that my team has a terrific stadium, a great training facility and academy, attendance in the 18,000 range, and multiple opportunities to win its way into regional and global tournaments. The Cosmos future hangs on the decision of NYS regarding their Belmont bid. They are a good soccer team, but a preseason loss to San Jose (MLS) and a victory over Boca Raton FC (???) is nothing to crow about.

            • William

RB fans like you spout the same end game. We have a great fanbase, great stadium etc but you never win and that’s the goal. What do you work for the RB’s concerned about how full the stadium is and how much profit they are making are you an accountant for the RB’s. Bottomline the RB franchise is a major major disappointment from 1996-2016 with very underwhelming results.

              • slowleftarm

Best team in MLS in the 2013 and 2015 seasons. If winning is the only goal maybe RBNY should join a minor league like NASL since that would make it far easier to win.

They wouldn’t be winning anything worth winning of course but then they could brag about “winning” like Hempstead.

                • William

hahahahhahahaa you are a joke !!!! again where are the championships ? u have had like 20 years.
Did u get your little townhall meeting yet? even the ants aren’t coming to that.

                  • slowleftarm

Have to love this guy. He doesn’t give up. Pathetic team playing minor league games in a college lacrosse stadium but he still talks a big game. RBNY just won two trophies that are more impressive than anything Cosmos have ever won at any time ever, including the now defunct old Cosmos. They play in arguably the best SSS in the country and draw crowds 4-5 times what Hempstead get and this guy still can’t just get on with his life and enjoy his minor league team. He still has to pretend his team is big time. He still has to post under multiple fake names.

                    • William

Harrison Metrostars playing in a tin can in the middle of NOWHEREVILLE in NJ and this guy is on his high horse. haahahahahahahaha you are a Joke !!!!!

                    • slowleftarm

Yep, middle of nowhere – 20 minutes from the city in the nicest stadium in the country. And all Cosmos can do is dust off Pele once a year. No wonder Cosmos fanboys are jealous.

    • MTF

The Cosmos are top dogs in New York? I guess in the same way the Long Island Ducks are the top dogs of baseball in Suffolk County. There are more people in the mens’ rooms at Yankee Stadium or RBA at any given time during a match than there are in the seats at Hofstra. Go to any LIRR train station on Long Island and ask 10 people about the Cosmos; you might find one person over 40 who will say, ‘Yeah, that team that Pele played for. I went to games as a kid with my Dad.’ The only way anyone under 40 knows the current team is if their kid’s youth soccer team attended a game. Ask the Cosmos ownership if they’d rather have 3,500 average attendance and their Soccer Bowls, or the 27,000 / 18,000 that NYCFC and the Red Bulls are averaging. Without Belmont they will soon be a twice-defunct soccer brand with a nice trophy case in Seamus O’Brien’s basement.

      • William

why do u care ? you RB fans spend more time commenting on the NY Cosmos than your own team. Actually I can see why your boy slowleftarm are looking to run away from that mess that is the Harrison Metrostars. Slowleft arm 35 comments on the NY Cosmos yet 3 comments on the Harrison Metrostars WHY ?

        • slowleftarm

Does that count include the fake comments you made under my name?

Again, no response to the actual substance of the comments, just crying that fans of other teams are picking on the “global brand”

          • William

Not crying at all but if I don’t care about something I don’t spend the majority of my time commenting on that like you do . And this is the first time over the past 2 days I have been on the site in a couple of months. Stop accusing you screwball. Who would want to fake you – you are a pathetic trolle – most hate you on this site anyway.

          • William

            Why do u care ?

  • Jerome

Congrats to the entire metro area of 11+ million people. We found 30,000 people to go to a game in yankees stadium and 25,000 to go to Red Bull park. Throwing stones at the cosmos wont get us to 40,000 people at a game, or the back pages of the NY newspapers.
Our sport, all leagues included, all local teams included is a big joke in the local sports scene.
We have one team thats been around for 20 years and going in the wrong direction in every category, another in year 2 of existence and the parent company’s stepchild at best, and the Cosmos waiting for the phone to ring from a date that already has
The play on the field is ametuer and local interest says so.
Soccer is not new to this country. Plenty of soccer fields in each town.
All NY area soccer teams outdone by the
NJ Devils. That’s as sad as it gets.

    • slowleftarm

How are RBNY going in the wrong direction in every category? Because they lost the first two games this year? Like pretty much everything else in your post – totally wrong.

      • William

your time to win it has come and gone. The Harrison Metrostars are a team and franchise going the wrong way and quickly.

        • slowleftarm

          Based on what Bill?

          • William

bill are you now faking Larry ?

            • slowleftarm
