New York Cosmos to host player combine in February

CosmosLogoCarlos Mendes needs more than a few teammates, and the Cosmos brass are eager to deliver.

After turning heads with the signing of the MLS veteran and Long Island native in December, player acquisition for the aspiring NASL side have hit quite a lull. In fact, as January comes to a close, the Cosmos are well behind their projected goal to acquire anywhere from “8-10″ players during this winter window.

As of now, Mendes is the only player on their roster.

The team’s “invite only” combine is expected to change all that. The event is open to the general public for registration. In fact, if you think you have what it takes to play for the Cosmos, CLICK THIS LINK and register before the February 8th, midnight deadline. The team will only entertain a select few candidates with the emphasis that space is limited.

As EoS reported earlier this month
, names like American goalkeeper Diego Restrepo and former U-23 Honduran Captain Johnny Leveron have been connected to the side, but both players appear to be pursuing interested suitors in MLS. Currently, Restrepo is in preseason camp with the Philadelphia Union as he vies for a spot with the team and Leveron is said to be “close” to signing with the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Though the team is expected to start play during the Fall NASL Championship, they have pursued a year long quest to fill their roster. During the Winter/Spring season, said acquisitions are expected to be loaned out to interested third parties to maintain player fitness for the coming inaugural season.

This tryout is the first in what is expected to be a series of combines that should run into the Spring season.
