The New York Cosmos have revealed their 17 man roster for the August 5th Paul Scholes testimonial match, and it is quite the mixed bag.

Lead by Fabio Cannavaro, nine former and current international football stars will be joining eight of the youngsters that make up the Cosmos U-23 PDL club to take on Manchester United at Old Trattford in what will be Paul Scholes final match.

Eric Cantona will be fielding quite the unique squad. Former United players Nicky Butt and Gary Neville will be a part of the Cosmos side, joining veteran American’s Brad Friedal and Brian McBride, with Tottenham’s Robbie Keane, Blackburn’s Michel Salgado, Sol Campbell and Patrick Viera rounding out the big name participants.

Academy players Chad Calderone, Ibrahim Diaby, Stefan Dimitrov, David Diosa, Marvin Iraheta, Dane Murphy, Yanik Rejering, and Moriken Sangary will be joining these stars to complete the side.

Some may recall Chad Calderone as the goalkeeper who played for the New York Pancyprian-Freedoms in their shootout loss to F.C. New York in the U.S. Open Cup earlier this year. Stefan Dimitrov, who had a stint with the Chicago Fire, has played well for the U-23 side, featuring as their main scoring threat, and thus earning his spot with the team. And to add that local New York flavor, both Ibrahim Diaby and Moriken Sangary were stand out’s right here in the city for the prestigious soccer program at Martin Luther King High School. This will give the youngsters that make up the top flight of the Cosmos development academy the opportunity to test their meddle against some of the World’s best.

For the Cosmos, this will be the first true professional match they would have played in nearly three decades. Though the world of American football can be constrictive, the aspiring ownership group, lead by real estate mogul Paul Kemsley, hope to put the proper foot forward in leading the charge to be Major League Soccer’s next expansion side, all while honoring the Cosmos historical penchant for the glamorous. The assemblage of superstars with home grown players is the embodiment of that ideal.

  • Only thing I can say to that is typo’s all, minus the Viera part – he is retired.

    Was expecting some sexier names

    • Not bad considering time frame and the fact the team doesn’t exist. Many in England were expecting better as well, but Cosmos need to give the event a local feel to further their portfolio of homegrown initiatives when meeting MLS brass, not just field stars. Like the fact Friedel and McBride are in it for the same reasons.
