Another key piece to the New York Red Bulls technical staff has been put into place just weeks away from the season opener.

Rafael Gonzalez, 42, will be the Red Bulls goalkeeper coach this season. Gonzalez last held a similar position with Spanish side Malaga but cut his teeth in the Aston Villa organization where he served under current Red Bulls Director of Global Soccer, Gerard Houllier.

“Rafa is a very experienced professional, with over two decades in soccer both as a player and a goalkeeper coach. We think he is a very strong addition to our coaching staff,” said Red Bulls Sporting Director Andy Roxburgh. “His knowledge in working at the highest levels of soccer will be beneficial in assisting the development of our three young goalkeepers.”

Gonzalez has long been a favorite for the position and has participated in Red Bulls training camp during both legs of the team’s preseason in Florida. EoS first reported his involvement with the team last month. He will join a staff led by Coach Mike Petke and assistant Robin Fraser . Former Red Bull John Wolyniec is also in consideration to be a part of the coaching staff as EoS first reported last week.
