New York Red Bulls part ways with Heath Pearce

Following up on reports from GoalUSA, EoS can independently confirm the New York Red Bulls and Heath Pearce have parted ways.

Pearce, 29, missed most of the 2013 season after electing to undergo hip surgery for a torn labrum. The former U.S. Men’s National Team player and three-time All Star picked up the injury shortly before being traded to Chivas USA in 2011. Despite the injury and a change from his natural leftback position to central defense, Pearce earned All Star honors that season and would repeat the accomplishment in 2012 as a part of the Red Bull organization.

His second season in New York proved to be too much for his battered hip to take. Clearly showing a drop in form, Pearce went from starter to spot duty for the Red Bulls. After consulting with doctors who warned of the gravity of his injury, Pearce chose to undergo surgery despite knowing this would be the final year of his contract.

Speaking exclusively to EoS last week,
Pearce expressed interest in returning to New York, but knew that his future was up in the air. “At the end of the day, I would love to stay in New York and be part of something for the future,” he said. “If that opportunity comes, I would be happy to continue. Will it happen? I am not really sure.”

Pearce becomes the fifth Red Bull to depart the team since the Red Bulls playoff ouster, following fellow fullback Brandon Barklage, David Carney, the retiring Kevin Hartman and Fabian Espindola.

UPDATE:

The New York Red Bulls have confirmed they’ve indeed cut ties with Heath Pearce.

“We want to thank Heath for his time at the club since joining in 2012,” said Red Bulls Sporting Director Andy Roxburgh in a club statement. “Following our discussions with Heath after the conclusion of the 2013 season, it was decided to not offer him a new contract in order to allow both parties to go in our separate ways.

“We wish Heath the best of luck in the next stage of his career.”
