The New York Cosmos could be losing Niko Kranjcar’s talents sooner than anyone expected after the midfielder pulled up with a groin injury less than three minutes into Sunday’s win over the Tampa Bay Rowdies.

Cosmos Head Coach Gio Savarese said after the match that the team was still waiting for a full evaluation to see if the groin injury is a pull or a tear, but he acknowledged that the injury could be more serious than they initially thought.

“Niko is unfortunate, we’ll find out a little bit more. It looks like it’s a little more serious than we expected, but we have to see,” Savarese said. “He was doing very well, it was a great day for him. So many Croatians came here for him and then after three minutes, he’s hurt. He’s been a little like that this season, but I think that the depth that we have had has provided good things.”

Besides the obvious negative impact of losing a dynamic player like Kranjcar, his exit after only picking up two touches in the match was doubly disappointing for the 1,000-plus Croatian supporters that had come out to Hofstra’s Shuart Stadium to see the veteran in action as part of Croatian Heritage Night.

The timing of Kranjcar’s injury is adverse for the Cosmos, who only have two games left on their schedule to secure a second straight Spring Season title. They hold a slim one-point lead over FC Edmonton at the moment, but Minnesota United FC and Indy Eleven are only two points back, and both hold a game in hand on the Cosmos and Eddies.

The Cosmos are also gearing up for another run in the U.S. Open Cup, a competition the club has placed particular importance on since it began participating in 2014. Their opening match in the single-elimination tournament against Jersey Express of the PDL is scheduled for June 1.

On top of all that, Kranjcar’s status with the club past June is questionable, as his current contract will expire after the Spring Season. Kranjcar and the Cosmos have spoken positively about the prospect of a return for the Fall Season in July, but the midfielder has recently started to draw serious interest from Rangers in Scotland.

Why now!!! Wanted to see Niko vs MLS caliber players. We need these last two games and hope for the best! We blew at least 4 points between the Indy 11 fiasco and the Minnesotta debacle. We need to win period!! Get better Niko!!!
