No progress on NYCFC’s search for a stadium

THE BRONX – New York City FC will be building 50 soccer fields for children across the five boroughs but has not made progress in its search to build one for itself.

According to a source within the office of Mayor Bill de Blasio, there are no new developments in the club’s search for a stadium. Club technical director Claudio Reyna issued a similar statement following Tuesday’s press event.

“There’s nothing else from the last statement that was made,” Reyna said. “We continue to have discussions. There are positive inroads being made but there’s no other comments to be made and we continue to work hard together with the City to find the right location.”

Reyna said he’s remaining patient during the search process and has not dwelled too much on it. NYCFC is averaging slightly less than 27,000 fans at its home games this season. Though the club has been able to draw healthy crowds, Reyna said that has not reduced its need for their own home field.

“From day one, we’ve been working hard to find the right location,” Reyna said. “There’s no added urgency but we are happy to be at Yankee Stadium and it really does feel like a home.”

Reyna pointed to the team’s recent home form as a sign of the club’s progress. He added that the team’s supporters have successfully created an atmosphere inside the stadium.

“We’ll look forward to the day when we have our own stadium but for now we have a great home at Yankee Stadium,” Reyna said.

DiBlasio is under increasing scrutiny involving possible corruption and cronyism. This means NYCFC will have a hard time using their money to manipulate zoning deals or tax deals.

Things will have to be done a lot cleaner than usual – and that’s a problem. People don’t always want a stadium / concert venue on their block and they definitely don’t want the richest people to get tax breaks.

I hope for the best, but I’m predicting the worst. They’ll be in Yankee stadium on their 10th anniversary.

    • Philip

I don’t think we have to worry about them asking for tax breaks when the time comes.

      • Jesse

        They always for tax breaks.
It seems crass, I know, but the wealthiest owners in the word always, always, ask for something.

        sucks

        • Philip

Nothing shocks me but iy would almost be beneath the dignity of the Sheik. This is a guy who spent $2B on affordable housing to get Man City’s academy done. I wouldn’t put it past him to do the same here.

            • James w

the man who watches a minor league team speaks pearls of wisdom as usual.

              • Did I say something that’s not accurate?

              • And this is the United States, it’s all minor league soccer.

              • Hrvat

I can’t stand this minor league talk. It’s soccer a game we love. I go watch LI men’s soccer play, PDL and other leagues. So what we don’t support it and if we do we are Minor League. Tell that Bournemouth fans or Leister City fans a few years ago. Support you team but you do need to shun the game in every sense of the world. I watch because I love the game and take my son to learn even from PDL games how to play. So sorry it does fit your need of a big stadium and multi million dollar players. We wonder why we never get anywhere with the sport.

      • Nat Mac

Every stadium deal involves tax breaks. They shouldn’t but they do. https://youtu.be/xcwJt4bcnXs

Plus, there’s just no land in the prime areas CFG wants. I don’t blame them for not wanting to go to the outer edges of Queens or Brooklyn, just to stay in NYC, like the Cosmos plan. But it limits the possibilities. YS may be iconinic, but the more I’ve seen games there, the more I realize it just sucks for soccer.

      • Nat Mac

Can you imagine City’s parent club playing Premier League matches that count on a pitch of that quality? That tells you all you need to know about the priorities of MLS. Marketing the team is more important than the sport the team plays.

  • rest of world

Am I wrong to wonder why the Cosmos and NYFC couldn’t share a stadium?
Jets and Giants do for crying out loud.
    Two lousy soccer venues…..

  • Jesse

This article’s been up for over a half hour. Shouldn’t we be hearing from that guy who always suggests the The Cosmos should buy Red Bull or vice versa?

    He must be running late

    • DanGerman

      Relax ACE !

      • DanGerman

Come on if you’re going to be a fake me at least try to be more troll like! Slow and Open get good clone trolls I get stuck with either a 12 year old or some developmentally challenged guy. :-(

        • Larry\’s a Simpleton

thats so typical of f.cosmos fans. they have very little brain and cant bring anything to the tables, so they log in under someones elses name. thats all they got.

          • Larry loves goats

Larry had a sex change folks.
Her new name is cynthia. She loves long walks on the beach and twinkies.
She is also a former pathmark stock person…worked in the tampon aisle.

            • Larry\’s a Simpleton

lol!! and your typical brainless, witless f.cosmos fanboy just proves my point and is too stupid to realize it! debating these idiots is fruitless! so when are the f.cosmos going to give back to the nyc community?

    • rest of world

I think the cosmos should buy red bull.

      • EnglishRBNY

There it is! Phew I thought your day care had forgot to feed you.

        • Sammy the Bull

Please RB is a joke of a franchise noone cares for RB not even their fans. Its always so tough rooting for fizzee little soft drinks.

          • Nat Mac

Easier to root for soda than oil.

            • EPL fan

yea not really littleman with your fizzee little drinks.

  • rest of world

The Jets couldn’t get a stadium approved. Remember a guy named Sheldon Silver that killed the deal?? NY is corrupt. Start greasing some palms, then it will happen.
Teaming up with the biggest crook in politics not a good idea.

  • Nat Mac

Reyna makes it sound like the team is settling in for a long while at Yankee Stadium. Back in 2013, didn’t they say they would have a new home within three years of the 2015 launch?

    • DanGerman

If I remember correctly they expected to announce something by year 4, these types of deals are almost never played out in public, you won’t hear anything about the new stadium until everything is signed and sealed.

      • That’s not true Dan, we knew all about NYCFC’s efforts to build a stadium just south of Yankee Stadium. We also heard about Columbia U., Aqueduct and and LIC. MLS and NYCFC are always eager to make stadium announcements.

        • DanGerman

Leo the only solid plan we heard about was the one DeBlasio shot down, the others Columbia U and Aqueduct was nothing more then the team meeting with people to gauge viability. If they were more serious they wouldn’t be more then blurbs on a few blogs. Mind you I wish the Cosmos would have had meetings with people instead of putting all their eggs in the Elmont basket, and stating that you’re just fine in Yankee Stadium when you’re looking for a stadium is just leverage since the team does have a decent stadium not ideal but certainly viable in the short term situation.

          • Right, it is wrong to say that you won’t hear anything until everything is signed and sealed. You heard about the bronx, and you heard about their inquiries into Columbia and Aqueduct. Is there something we haven’t heard about in terms of stadium sites? Flushing Meadows was obviously a very public process.

In NYC it’s impossible to “sign and seal” any major project without it being public because of the ULURP. That’s just how it is.

            • Goodfella

Is ULURP applicable for non city property? Let’s say for instance if the stadium site was Columbia?

              • Leo Glickman

yes it does goodfella. It’s the Universal Land Use Review Process.

            • Ty\\s

Leo, This argument boggles my mind about NYCFC fans. It’s like they aren’t even from this city l. “Sign and Seal” that’s not NYC. Everybody’s in on these discussions from unions, residents, politicians even teachers at P.S. 125.

I know we hate the “Cosmos should buy the RBs” guy but at least that’s based in some reality.

A secretvive sign and seal deal? Are u freaking kidding me?

              • EnglishRBNY

“I know we hate the “Cosmos should buy the RBs” guy but at least that’s based in some reality.”

                Seriously. Are you smoking K2?

              • Crackhead Bob.

They’re not from NY. They are all hipster transplants who live in Bushwick or suburban morons like Nick Vhavez.

      • they said they would not play in Yankee Stadium for more than three seasons. Which of course never had a chance.

        • Goodfella

From the onset, the club has never put a timeline on how long they’ll be in YS: “”Our goal is to be in a soccer-specific building as soon as possible. At the same time, we’re not going to create artificial deadlines based on pressure that comes from different directions. We’re only going to get one shot to do that, so I think we’re going to take the time necessary to get it done.”

        • MTF

NYCFC will still be in Yankee Stadium in 2025, and the State will still not have a decision regarding Belmont. Depressing. There’ll also probably be nothing going on at Nassau Coliseum either!

          • Leo Glickman

Sadly you are probably right MTF. This state sucks.

        • Joe Jobs

Leo, at this point, it doesn’t matter if NYCFC plays one or five more seasons at Yankee Stadium. They are located in a strategic place which boosts attendance for them. Unfortunately, the Cosmos’ location hinders their growth in the city. You can’t deny, from a logistical standpoint, that NYCFC are currently in a better position than the Cosmos.

With their attendance as a point of reference, NYCFC have a greater chance than the Cosmos of convincing the politicians and communities that a 30,000 seat stadium is viable. I am in favor of both clubs succeeding, but we can’t sit around here and deny that the Cosmos have not dug their own hole and each week they keep digging deeper. They need to move.

I am almost certain that NYCFC will get a stadium deal within the coming year. Let’s just call it a hunch.

      • EPL fan

oh Dan you are the eternal optimist congrats !!! keep the dream alive hahahaha. SAPP

  • Larry\’s a Simpleton

27000 per game. or as thats known out there in f.cosmos country, the entire spring season.

    • Soapy & Sal

I will be writing every NYC politician to express anger at New York city potentially giving the wealthiest owner any tax break or non monetary accommodations. I will also be writing to Yonkers politicians to encourage them to actively engage NYCFC about building a stadium north of the city. Great public transportation, cheaper to build – makes sense.

I encourage everyone else to do the same.

      • If they build a stadium in Yonkers or anywhere in Westchester it would be extremely impracticable for fans in Brooklyn or Queens to attend games… that’s over 50% of the population of the city. Take a subway to Grand Central and then catch the Metro North? I guess some people would be willing drive an hour each way and $40+ in tolls and parking.

Red Bull already have that stadium model and it’s not working out for them in terms of attendance.

    • Larry loves goats

Larry. Counting attendence and not trophies. At a girl larry…i mean cynthia.

      • Larry\’s a Simpleton

you werent complaining last night when we were cuddling. oh poor poor f.cosmos fanboys are so easy! so when is stover and obrien and the f.cosmos going to give back to the nyc community?

  • It’ll be in Long Island City. I now encourage all Red Bull and Cosmos fans to go back to your homes and be with your families during these difficult times.

    • Crackhead Bob.

Yes, they will built in on Queens Boulevard. Are you on crack?

  • Gotham knight

Anything can happen and I mean anything can happen.
Nycfc should make a portable stadium like Vancouver did. Another simple suggestion, help cosmos get their stadium and pay rent at cosmos new stadium and then get your own.

    • MTF

There it is! “Another simple suggestion, help cosmos get their stadium and pay rent at cosmos new stadium and then get your own.” Yeah right! Heck, why don’t the Red Bulls be neighborly and let NYCFC play their home games at Red Bull Arena? MLS and the NASL and NYCFC and the Cosmos are not about to start doing business together.

      • Gotham knight

Garber will not let nycfc play at red bull or if he does, nycfc will never pay rent at red bull.
But let’s be honest, anything can happen and if cosmos want a new stadium then just offer half rent or free play at their stadium, until nycfc gets their stadium.
Isn’t cosmos stadium with the state and nycfc with the city, two different stadium deals.
Another crazy scenario, Red bull rebrands and offers cheap rent to nycfc.

if all the leagues in the US are minor, you might as well support the top tier one – MLS. (at least they are putting money into developing homegrown players for the future of US soccer)

nasl is not worth supporting b/c they have like 12 teams, 2 are folding in a year or so (they can’t even pay their people), and other ones are leaving for MLS, the writing is on the wall…

            • Leo Glickman

If they’re all minor, then I might as well just follow La Liga. That’s where your argument leads James W. Well done.

              • EPL fan

I agree Leo this guy James W is a MORON with a capital M

              • DanGerman

Actually Leo I believe you were the one who first made that claim and while I disagree with you about all soccer here being minor league, I am shocked how anti-american your view on soccer is, if a league isn’t a copy of a European one then it sucks it seems. The sport will never reach its peak here with that style of thinking.

      • Sammy the Bull

Boy you are the #1 Drama Queen of this thread as usual . Now go paint your toenails Queenie. I am DONE WITH U !
