BPL Transfer Notebook: Saints swap Osvaldo for Taider, Liverpool add Manquillo on loan, more

Southampton has had a summer where the majority of their key contributors have left. Another player – Dani Osvaldo – has followed suit, but this time, the Saints get a player in return.

Saphir Taider makes the move to England’s South Coast in a year-long loan swap deal sending Osvaldo to Inter Milan. Osvaldo spent most of last season on loan at Juventus after struggling to fit in and adjust to life at Southampton, says Sky Sports.

“It’s part of our philosophy to bring in talented young players who like to learn and develop themselves, and that’s true of Saphir,” Saints manager Ronald Koeman said.

“First of all, he is a talented football player. He’s 22 and has already played for Algeria at the World Cup.”

Taider’s versatility in the squad should help cover some of the gaps left by the departures of five first team players.

“I’ve spoken to him about the positions he can play in. He can play as a controlled midfielder but he can also move up around the box and up front, which is a good thing for a coach,” said Koeman.

“It was a good meeting because he showed me real ambition and he brings competition to the squad.”

Manquillo loaned to Liverpool from Atletico Madrid

Liverpool have added another player after a very active summer. Javier Manquillo joins on a two-year loan deal with the potential to make it permanent after the first year, according to Sky Sports.

“I’m very happy to have signed for a club like Liverpool,” he said. “I think it’s one of the biggest in Europe. Any footballer would want to come and play here.”

The 20-year-old has played six times for the Atletico first team after making his debut in 2011. The Under-20 Spain international began his youth career at Real Madrid before making the jump to rivals Atleti.

He becomes the seventh signing for the Reds and will look to have an immediate impact on the right side of defense.

“When they tell you Liverpool want to sign you, I think like any player, you are going to be absolutely amazed and you don’t think of anything else than going straight there,” he said.

“The immediate objective is to do the best I possibly can here. I’ve come here to try and secure a place for myself in the side and, if possible, stay here for many more years in the future.”
