Earlier this week, City Football Group chairman Khaldoon al Mubarak revealed that the group would look into adding a women’s professional team to accompany New York City FC.

Empire of Soccer has received a response from the NWSL regarding those comments.

“We are very pleased with the overall level of interest and ongoing discussions regarding potential expansion teams, but it would be premature to discuss specific markets,” league spokesperson Patrick Donnelly said. “We are in talks with more than a dozen potential ownership groups, who are at various stages from the initial sharing of information to more significant discussions. We currently have Sky Blue FC in the metropolitan area.”

Sky Blue has been in the NWSL since 2013 and plays its matches at Yurcak Field on Rutgers University’s campus. The club had discussed an affiliation with the New York Red Bulls but CEO Thomas Hofstter told Soccerwire.com that Red Bull ownership set conditions that forced the club to back out of the deal.

Sky Blue FC said it was not in a position to comment.
