NWSL’s Sky Blue Releases Schedule

by TOM SLATER

Sky Blue opens its 2017 National Women’s Soccer League schedule at the Seattle Reign on April 15, then plays at Boston on April 23 before opening the home part of its 24-game schedule — against Kansas City at Yurcak Field, on the campus of Rutgers University in Piscataway, N.J., on April 30.

“We are very excited to have our full schedule publicly announced,” Coach Christy Holly said. “We cannot wait to get the season rolling.”

Each NWSL team will play 24 games this year, up from 20 over the past two seasons, with each of the 10 clubs playing 12 at home and 12 on the road. The league will observe three FIFA dates: the weekends of June 10-11, July 29-30 and Sept. 16-17. Unlike the previous two seasons that overlapped with the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup and 2016 Rio Olympics, there are no tournament breaks this year.

The playoffs will begin in early October. The NWSL will gain additional TV time this year in a partnership with A+E Networks, with the Lifetime channel showing a game every Saturday, which includes a 30-minute pregame show. That A+E schedule has not yet been announced.
