NY Minute: Chelsea v. Celtic At Yankee Stadium, Agudelo called up and More

Over the past several years, New York has been spoiled with World-class soccer events gracing the landscape through the summer months. This year, there will be an extra special twist to the fun.

Chelsea of the English Premiership will be taking on Celtic of the Scottish Premier in Yankee Stadium for a midsummer friendly, according to various reports. No date has been officially confirmed for the match.

Yankee Stadium was the home to many a Cosmos match back during the team’s 1976 season. Prior to that, Celtic actually graced their pitch before. The team played in Yankee Stadium in 1931 when the Scottish powerhouse visited the states to take on the New York Yankees of the American Soccer League (and no, Babe Ruth was NOT playing).

This news follows reports of other hot summer tickets, including a match at Metlife Stadium between Argentina and Brazil, and a rumored Red Bull’s encounter against dreaded Arsenal foe Tottenham as well.

Let the catching up continue! Here’s some news that fell through the cracks while all eyes were on the MLS season opener, only on your New York Minute:

——-

JUAN AGUDELO … has been called up to the US U-23 camp by Caleb Porter. The news comes as no surprise; Red Bull’s coach Hans Backe has been speaking about his eventual departure for weeks. Agudelo will be competing in CONCACAF Olympic qualifiers, facing Canada, Cuba and El Salvador.

——-

ROBERTO SIERRA RETURNS TO THE AIRWAVES … Quite a splash was made last season when long-time Red Bull Hispanic Media coordinators Ernesto Motta and Roberto Sierra were axed by the team. In a strange about face, Sierra has returned to the team in a similar, yet different role. The Spanish commentating veteran will be joining Nelson Rubio in the booth forming this years broadcast partnership. All matches will be broadcast on WLIB 1190 AM.

——-

FIFA SEZ … The New York Red Bulls will run away with the Eastern Conference, according to EA Sports 2012 MLS Season simulation. The Galaxy will win the Supporters Shield and MLS Cup while Robbie Keane edges out Dwayne De Rosario for the Golden Boot. Check out the results here.

AND FINALLY …

Look. I would be completely remiss if I did not address last night’s Nationally televised encounter between the Portland Timbers and the Philadelphia Union. Terrible weather and cold temperatures did little to keep away fans who were aching to see some live MLS action. Though the play suffered a bit, the drama was intense.
