Just a few months ago, hundreds of Red Bull fans lamented the unceremonious dumping of Juan Pablo Angel by New York management. Today, Soler and company could very well rename themselves Nostradamus and The Gang.
Angel has under produced so severely that even his relationship with Bruce Arena couldn’t save him from being traded away in favor of 31 year old Irish National Team captain, Robbie Keane. With only three goals to his name, Angel’s lack of production has landed him a spot with Chivas USA. Early reports are suggesting that the Galaxy will most likely be eating a chunk of his $1 million salary.
Keane, who just finished representing the fledgling New York Cosmos for Manchester United’s Paul Scholes Testimonial encounter earlier this month, leaves Tottenham for Hollywood Hills, joining Landon Donovan and David Beckham in what must be considered the most powerful side in Major League Soccer today. As you may recall, Beckham trained with the Hotspurs this offseason. Perhaps he had a hand in all of this …
Either way, the once beloved New York striker has now moved on to his third MLS side. Meanwhile, Red Bull fans are hoping not to see this type of scenario develop as a result ….
While the league continues to buzz over the acquisition of Robbie Keane, the New York Minute brings you all the other good stuff that is happening, in and around New York! Check it out, after the jump.
HECK OF A START
Though the team didn’t quite perform up to expectations on the pitch, one man must have been beaming ear to ear. Red Bulls President Chris Heck managed to focus the teams marketing department to doing something that seemed nearly impossible a few short weeks ago; selling out Red Bull Arena. This time, it didn’t take David Beckham and the traveling Galaxy circus to do it either. Heck implemented a unique Henry t-shirt giveaway that managed to bring in a good amount of people. That, along with a few discounted groupon tickets, attracted a crowd to see the lowly Chicago Fire in the middle of the hot month of August.
Around these parts, that is a miracle, and a good start to Hecks marketing regime.
If there was any saving grace to the FC New York USLPro season, it was the emergence of Jhonny Arteaga. As we discussed in the FCNY Season Wrap last week, Arteaga came up huge for FCNY. As the entire team floundered through the summer months, Arteaga kept netting goals, ultimately ending the season as USLPro’s top striker.
Well, it seems someone took notice. Arteaga has joined the Red Bulls reserve side, and has already made an impact. The Red Bull reserves managed a come from behind victory thanks to Areaga’s brace to beat the Union reserves 2-1. For those counting at home, that would be six goals in his past two games for Arteaga, who continues to be a house on fire.
And speaking of FC New York players ….
OWEN MORRISON JOINS DERRY CITY FC
Do you remember that vicious strike from midfield that absolutely laid claim to Greg Sutton‘s goal to open the scoring in the Red Bulls / FCNY Open Cup clash? That was Owen Morrison, who seems to have made waves while enjoying his short taste of America.
Morrison has signed with Derry County of the League of Ireland Premier Division.
