NY Minute: Keeper Frank Rost, Forward Eidur Gudjohnsen To RBNY?, Cosmos Copa Rolls On, Jay-Z And More

Once again, the New York Red Bulls are dominating Major League Soccer’s transfer headlines. The Dwayne De Rosario for Dax McCarty exchange left open the possibility for some player movement, and the speculation is running rampant.

Hamburg’s Frank Rost becomes the newest name du’jour to potentially take the reigns as the Red Bulls goalkeeper. Rost, who has been with Hamburg since 2007, has played 150 out of a possible 153 appearances with the German side, and was recently released. Erik Soler, who has spent time with Hamburg in the past, has reportedly made overtures of an acquisition according to Goal.com. This comes on the heels of Red Bulls proclamation that they are indeed actively searching the market for goalkeeping options.

Likewise, the silly season has also managed to link former Barcelona striker Eidur Gudjohnsen to the Red Bulls as well. Last season, Gudjohnsen was near a deal to join Sporting KC when negotiations fell through. He would later join Fulham, only to be transferred to Stoke City for a half season.

Gudjohnsen is currently being pursued by recently promoted side Swansea City, where club manager Brendan Rodgers is high on adding the veteran forward for the 2011 campaign. The Red Bulls were connected in the report with possible interest, but that would seem highly unlikely; the team is currently the highest scoring side in MLS with a wealth of talent on their forward lines. The move would be highly unlikely, but then again, that is the nature of the transfer season; heap’s of speculation with a sprinkle of truth for flavor.

Here’s the rest of the news in your New York Minute.

Red Bulls News And Notes

There are a few wrinkles heading into this weekends clash at home against long time team rival, DC United.

– Teemu Tainio will be unavailable due to yellow card accumulation.
– Luke Rodgers, still recovering from plantar fasciitis, will be available for this weekends fixture, but will have to play carefully; he is one yellow card away from an accumulation rest himself.
– Thierry Henry is once again the Castrol Index’s top rated league player.
– Henry has also taken a goal lead in the MLS Golden Boot standings.
– Recovering defender Chris Albright may be looking at U.S. Open Cup action as soon as next week. Much like last year, this was the tournament that allowed the back line fixture to recover ahead of the teams playoff push.
– There is no word on the condition of Brian Nielsen or his availability for playing time.

PDL Cosmos Dismantle Ocean City Nor’easters 4-1

Continuing with their friendly schedule for 2011, the PDL Cosmos achieved their first victory in dramatic fashion, beating the Ocean City Nor’easters 4-1 at Carey Stadium Wednesday night.

Academy player Moriken Sangary opened the scoring for the Cosmos and tallied a second notch later in the game. Goalkeeping standout Chad Calderone, who featured for the Pancyprian Freedoms against FC New York in the Open Cup a few weeks prior, continued his hard nosed play in preserving the Cosmos early lead.

This was the largest victory by margin for the Cosmos side this season.
