NY Minute: MLS All Star Weekend, Cosmos Add Yorke, Bridge, Pires to Scholes Match, Red Bulls Update, Cosmos Copa Finals, and More

It may be 10000000 degrees out today, but much like the City, soccer never sleeps! We’ve got a ton of stories for you to follow this weekend, but few larger than this:

It’s All Star Weekend! This Wednesday night, Thierry Henry will lead Landon Donovan, David Beckham and the leagues best against Wayne Rooney (maybe) and Manchester United. With that in mind, MLS has organized some great events and attractions in the city to bring a spotlight to the game.

Yesterday, Tim Ream and the newest American midfield sensation, Brek Shea, rang the closing bell at the Stock Exchange to kick off five days of festivities leading to the big game. Today at 11 a.m., MLS will be unveiling their “All Star Hub,” which will be open to the public through Sunday, and will be located on 82 Mercer. All Star players will also be making appearances at the hub throughout the weekend, so make sure to visit early and often.

On Monday, Herald Square will be the site of the “MLS PK Challenge,” where players of the MLS All-Star team, Manchester United, former World Cup players, New York Red Bulls players, local youth soccer players, celebrities and others will take shot to break the Guinness World Record for most consecutive penalty kicks in a row.

Many other events will be taking place as well, so continue to check back for updates. Meanwhile, here are a few more stories you will be hearing about throughout the weekend:

NEW YORK COSMOS ADD MORE BIG NAMES TO SCHOLES TESTIMONIAL MATCH

Image The Guardian

With few roster spots to fill before the August 5th Paul Scholes Testimonial Match against Manchester United, the New York Cosmos have sought out more firepower to bolster their mixed bag lineup.

Current Manchester City fullback Wayne Bridge has joined the side, along with
37 year old French international Robert Pires and former United striker and Scholes teammate, Dwight Yorke of Trinidad and Tobago. These big name players will be joined by 22 year old Jamaican striker, Dawyne ‘Balla Rick’ Smith, of the Cosmos Academy. Don’t be surprised if a few more names are announced before this one is all over.

RAFA MARQUEZ IS BACK TONIGHT

Rafa Marquez may not be participating in the MLS All Star Game this year, but that won’t stop him from taking the pitch in desert like heat to take on F.C. Dallas tonight. The Mexican International will be making his return to Red Bull Arena after suffering a leg injury during the CONCACAF Gold Cup competition. Tonight will mark his 10th appearance of the season, and his first in Red Bull uniform since May 21st against the Houston Dynamo.

COSMOS COPA: CHAMPIONSHIP WEEKEND

Finally, the month’s long tournament for New York’s ethnic soccer bragging rights will come to a climax this weekend. NYC Poland will look to continue their reign as Cosmos Copa champions when they take on NYC England in the semifinal of the tournament. They will be taking the pitch on Field 8 of Flushing Meadow Park this afternoon at 4p.m. Likewise, NYC Mexico looks to follow in their International teams footsteps, as they take on NYC Senegal on Field 9. The winners will then advance to the Copa Final, this Sunday at 12pm on Field 8.

NEW YORK RED BULLS “LEGENDS” MATCH

As part of the All Star game festivities, the Red Bulls are organizing a “Legends” match, featuring former Metrostar and Red Bull players against some of the best youth soccer stars in the Harrison area.

Lead by Tab Ramos, the team boasts names like Tony Meola, John Harkes, Mike Petke, Giovanni Savarese, Shep Messing, Cris Da Silva, Clint Mathis, Seth Stammler and Alexi Lalas. This event will be taking place on the Harrison Soccer Courts, located at the corner of Frank E. Rodgers Boulevard and Jersey Street in Harrison, N.J. on Monday, 8pm.

DO NOT MISS …

The Copa America Finals! This is a special one, as Diego Forlan and Uruguay face off against super underdog’s, Paraguay, on Sunday July 24th at 3pm. Univision will be bringing you all the action, and who knows? Maybe Larissa Riquelme will make an appearance …

FC New York Struggles Continue

Last week, FC New York traveled to Harrisburg, only to get dismantled by the City Islanders 5-1. The defeat, the largest in club history, further extends the clubs winless streak, with their last victory coming July 1st against the Antigua Barracuda’s. Johnny Arteaga was the lone scorer for the side, which continues to play without former striking stand out, Graciano Brito.

FC New York Announces Three Game Tour In Guyana

Garth Nelson of the Guyana Football Federation extended an invitation to F.C. New York to take part in a three game tour to play some of the islands professional sides and F.C. New York happily accepted. The USLPro side will be taking on four sides during the tour in anticipation of the 2012 season.

For Guyana, this will be the first professional side to play there since Hull City did in 1974. FCNY will be facing 2011-12 CONCACAF Champions League qualifiers Alpha United on February 6 to start off the festivities. They will then take on MileRoc FC, the 2010 Guyana Super League runner-up and Caribbean Football Union Club championship qualifier, and round out their island tour against the Guyana U23 men’s national team. From their, F.C. New York will head to Trinidad and Tobago to face 2010-11 TT Pro League runnerup, AIA Caledonia.

Appreciate the updates. One quick but important note. Guyana is not an Island, it is on the mainland of South America…It’s part of the West Indies but not the Caribbean…Its part of latin america but speaks english…just some Guyanese Pride! Thanks.
