NY MINUTE: USWNT Juggernaut, Red Bull News and Notes, Weekend Action And More

Thirty eight goals for, zero against in five games. Is Pia Sundhage feeding these girls Cheerios and steroids for breakfast?

The United States Women’s National Team is absolutely ripping apart their competition, even after qualifying for the Olympics! The US booked their ticket on the 27th with a 3-0 defeat of Costa Rica. That didn’t stop them from steamrolling Canada two days later, 4-0.

Looking more like a team that is out to make a statement rather than simply qualify and fold up shop, the US ladies have been throwing beatings and taking names. Here is a look at the Super Bowl type scores the ladies have registered thus far:

US 14 – 0 Dominican Republic
US 13 – 0 Guatemala
US 4 – 0 Mexico
US 3 – 0 Costa Rica
US 4 – 0 Canada

The frightening scorelines have been spearheaded by a hungry forward pool of Amy Rodriguez (6), Abby Wambach (6), Syndey Leroux (5) and Alex Morgan (5). Not to be outdone, midfielders Carli Lloyd (6) and Heather O’Reilly (4) added a secondary level of firepower that looked frighteningly dominant compared to the opposition.

Whether it is in the Men’s or Women’s National pool, scores like that are rarely, if ever, witnessed. The ladies hope the momentum carries them throughout the year as the Olympics in London loom in late June.

While the ladies look towards the Summer, Red Bull fans are more concerned with a long, drawn out winter. Here is a look at what has been going on in New York, and around the world in this weeks ‘NY Minute’:

REAM v. HENRY

Mark your calendar for this Wednesday folks; there is a good chance that Bolton’s latest acquisition will Tim Ream will face off against his former Captain Thierry Henry when the Wanderers host Arsenal February 1st.

A SPARKES PLUG FOR THE KEEPERS?

The Red Bulls have a very young core of goalkeepers. Jeremy Vuolo is a second year professional coming off of a starting campaign in Finland. Ryan Meara is fresh out of college. Even local boy Chris Konopka, who was spotted last week during Red Bulls training, provides little experience to speak of.

New York hopes Andrew Sparkes can change all of that. Sparkes has played an integral part in the Red Bulls academy on all levels (internationally and domestically) and has joined Red Bull New York to help cultivate the teams young talent.

The goalkeeping coach position has been under much flux since New York released former club mainstay Des MacAleenan under mysterious circumstances last April.

JUAN AGUDELO OUT OF ACTION

As the January transfer window nears an end, it looks like Agudelo will be rejoining the Red Bulls … for now. It probably did not help situations any that the young American picked up an ankle sprain at USMNT practice that will see him miss 3-4 weeks of action.

CONDE IN?

Coach Backe confirmed rumors last week that the Red Bulls will possibly add veteran centerback Wilman Conde to the fold. Several reports out of Colombia have the move slated to be announced this week.

JOHN ROONEY …

… has landed with Orlando City FC of the USL.

16 ENTER, ONLY 5 REMAIN

With enough trialists to field two NBA starting sides (and an adequate bench at that!), the Red Bulls have paired down their guest players to five according to MLSSoccer.com. The remaining names include Jhonny Arteaga, Jose Angulo, Ryan Maduro, Giorgi Chirgadze and Brandon Barklage.

DID YOU MISS DONOVAN v. DEMPSEY?…. AND THE RUMOR MILL

Michael Ballack and Alessandro Del Piero continue to be linked to New York. Various reports have continue to insist on Ballack’s apparent interest in joining the Red Bulls, while others cite Del Piero’s desire for a move towards the Galaxy or New York.

Hans Backe did say the Red Bulls were in contact with possible DP caliber midfielders for a summer transfer last week. Either way, take these names with a grain of salt folks.

  • Just like that Conde is signed.

From what I understand, Ream probably won’t get his work permit until after the game against Arsenal, so that’ll be a relief. :)

I wonder who were the two remaining unnamed trialists are. The third one is interestingly from DC United and he apparently have been plagued with injuries. Barklage must be showing very well if he’s going to Mexico.

It’s also pretty interesting that compared to last year, Backe hasn’t signed any of the supplemental picks and not even going to Mexico. Finally learned to be picky.
