NYCFC acquire Josh Williams from Crew, international slot from DC

New York City FC are now an eight player operation thanks to their Monday morning trade for Columbus Crew SC defender, Josh Williams.

The 26-year-old Copley native has played a total of 71 games for the Crew, including 65 starts, since 2010, scoring four goals and four assists in that time.  He became a regular starter for the club in 2012, making 30 appearances and earning three assists throughout the season.

He comes to NYCFC in exchange for an undisclosed allocation.

“Josh has been a positive influence for this club on and off the field. Unfortunately, the Expansion Draft is designed to provide new teams with quality players from within the League, especially from teams with as many valuable, young players as us,” said Sporting Director and Head Coach Gregg Berhalter in a club statement. “We assessed our risks heading into this week’s Draft and determined that this proactive move allowed us to place Josh in an organization where he can flourish while also minimizing the Draft’s impact on the club’s offseason plans.”

Williams joins Designated Player’s David Villa and Frank Lampard along with Kwame Watson-Siriboe, Josh Saunders, Jeb Brovsky, Andrew Jacobson and recent addition Matt Dunn in the burgeoning roster.

NYCFC have also acquired an international slot from DC United in exchange for allocation money.
