New York City FC bolstered their defense today with a pair of signings. Andoni Iraola has joined the club on a free transfer from Athletic Bilbao, and the club signed Man City prospect Jose Angel Tasende on a season-long loan.

Neither player will be officially start with the club until the MLS transfer window reopens on July 8th, which  is three weeks away.

In Iraola, NYCFC is getting a right back with significant La Liga experience. The 32-year-old Basque defender has made 510 appearances for Bilbao since 2003, the fourth-most in the club’s long history. Iraola played in 30 league matches in all of his 12 seasons, except for this most recent one. He made seven appearances for the Spanish national team, but injury prevented him from being on the squad that won Euro 2012. Despite his pedigree, Iraola will not occupy a designated player slot.

The age and experience of Iraola is balanced by Angelino, who comes to New York from Manchester City’s youth system. Another Spaniard, Angelino is 18, and Jason Kreis took notice of him during his time in Manchester. He joins Shay Facey as products of NYCFC’s affiliation with Man City.

Both of these signings are additions to a back line that hasn’t done that poorly for NYCFC. Their 19 goals allowed is middle-of-the pack in the Eastern Conference.
