New York City FC are prepared to go into the 2017 campaign without the services of defender Jefferson Mena.

Barcelona S.C. Vice President Alfaro Moreno announced via press conference the acquisition of five new talents to the Ecuadorian side, including a new loanee in Mena.

The loan deal is for one year, with a club option to buy the player outright. Mena joins José Ayoví, Abel Casquete, Byron Castillo y Joel Montezuma as the newest additions to the club.

Mena, 27, has had a difficult stay with NYCFC, never quite living up to his billing as a potential starting centerback for the club. He appeared in 23 total matches over two years, earning 22 starts, scoring a single goal throughout his time with the team. The team was a modest 11-10-3 in matches featuring Mena.

With Mena gone, NYCFC now touts Frederic Brillant, Maxime Chanot and Ethan White as their primary centerback options. Longtime MLS veteran, Jason Hernandez, is no longer with the club.

NYCFC have not confirmed the loan as of the time of this publication.
