NYCFC Notes: Vieira slams scheduling, looks to improve home form

Vieira disappointed to be playing in international break

New York City FC will be without three starters (Ronald Matarrita, Mix Diskerud and Khiry Shelton) who are away on international duty — much to head coach Patrick Vieira’s dismay.

“It’s a little bit disappointing that we have to play the game knowing that it is an international week — especially knowing that there’s only three games as well,” Vieira said. “That is the way it is and we have to deal with it but I think the best option would be for the teams to not have their best players go to international duty and play the game but of course international is international and we can’t change that so maybe the best option is to stop the three games and just go into internationals.”

NYCFC are one of only six teams playing this Saturday. Each team is losing first team regulars to international duty. NYCFC will have to play during four FIFA windows this season, a task Vieira said his squad is deep enough to handle.

“We had a good week of training with players fighting for spots in the starting eleven,” Vieira said. “That is what I want and obviously having these three players away. Some players who didn’t start any of the games will start and it will be really good for them to show what they can do.”

Mena fit for selection giving Vieira options

Jefferson Mena continued another week of training with the New York City FC squad and is available for selection.

The Colombian centerback sprained his ankle early preseason but returned to training last week.

Mena could play on the left in a back three or as a centerback in a back four. He is still getting up to speed on Vieira’s demands, especially while in the back three but has no problems with the ankle. Diego Martinez can play either position and already has played both roles under Vieira in preseason.

Home Form

New York City dropped four points from its first two matches at Yankee Stadium. NYCFC dropped 25 points in home matches last season, tied for second-worst in MLS.

Vieira said he is still emphasizing his side’s style of play over getting the result but he wants them to cut the costly mistakes it made in its loss to Orlando City.

“The priority for me is how we play and then the three points,” Vieira said.

Vieira said he is looking for NYCFC to be focused and concentrated from the first minute of Saturday’s match. He said the team did not display that last week but recovered after conceding the early goal.

He has a point. Playing during international breaks is silly.

Wow, William is really using a lot of different names to post the same stuff.

Garber stated earlier this year that each team had the option of not playing on international dates. It seems NYCFC chose to play so they could squeeze as many games in as possible before the Yankees start up. This is on them.

    • slowleftarm

Oh I see – I guess they are limited in their potential home dates because of baseball season.

For some reason you always comment on other teams besides your own. Why is that ?

      • Dax

Yes why it that slow ? you have a mess over there in Harrison.

        • slowleftarm

I wasn’t aware there was a rule that you could only comment on your own club. Here’s an idea – how about responding to what I’m actually saying instead of just saying that I shouldn’t be posting about other teams? That would actually make this site an interesting discussion of soccer instead of a bunch of pointless personal attacks.

Yeah, real mess over here. CCL, two SS in the last three years, academy products signing for Chelsea and Man U. Most teams in this country (and certainly any other teams in the NYC area) would gladly sign up for such a “mess”.

You have not served the family well.

But the team has never been a champion like the COSMOS always are why is that slowbrainy hahaahahahhaa

            • slowleftarm

True but the team has never had the opportunity to play in a minor league against teams from Ottawa and Jacksonville. If they had, they would’ve won plenty by now, William.

            • Eric B

Where’s the Cosmos’ USOC? We know that’s their ultimate goal, and they haven’t exactly come close yet.

          • Guy Blades

Its cute the way you guys fight. It reminds me of when Derrick and I first met and fell in love at the fire house. All that anger was covering up deep desire and pent up passion. You go for it, boys. Live the life!

            • slowleftarm

Guy hold me I need you so

  • Garber
