NYCFC stay hot, make statement against Galaxy

The Bronx – After conceding a last-minute equalizer against Columbus Crew SC last week, New York City FC responded with a clean sheet in their win against the LA Galaxy to re-affirm their status on top of the Eastern Conference.

“For us it was a huge game after two difficult games on the road where we tied and wanted to make good by coming back with a win,” Andoni Iraola said. “It was a good game for us. We were solid at the back, we didn’t concede a lot of challenges and we deserved the win.”

NYCFC extended their home winning streak to four and have only lost twice in the 11 matches since the end of the Copa America break. They came into Saturday’s match in front of Toronto FC by one point in the Eastern Conference and in front of the New York Red Bulls by two.

The win also moved City to third in the Supporters Shield standings.

“We knew it was an important game coming in and we knew they had a great attack that we had to find some way to stop,” Jack Harrison said. “We really played well as a team today and managed to do that.”

Saturday’s clean sheet was City’s fifth since the beginning of June. They have only allowed five goals in the five matches at home during that time. The recent form is a far cry from earlier this season when NYCFC dropped points at home either through poor performances or wasting good performances by conceding last minute goals.

“I think there’s been a drastic change from the beginning to the season to now in how we play together,” Ronald Matarrita said. “Whether we’re playing home or away, we want to win. We’re professionals and it’s very important for us to keep playing well.”
