Few incoming New York City FC players have impressed as much as fullback, Ronald Matarrita.

That sentiment must also be felt by Costa Rican boss Oscar Ramirez.

Ramirez named his 23-man roster for this year’s Copa Centenario tournament, which includes NYCFC’s dynamic defender in the fold. This year, Matarrita has started 10 of NYCFC’s 11 matches on the season, missing just one match due to international duty. While he has accumulated all of one assist, his work on the backline has given an added depth and dimension to NYCFC on both sides of the ball. The Costa Rican back, who is no stranger to forward advances, has become a key cog in Patrick Vieira’s press and offense. He has also been one of the team’s most consistent backline contributors.

Matarrita will miss NYCFC’s May 29th match against Orlando City and their June 2nd encounter against Real Salt Lake. Unless Costa Rica advances, he will likely be eligible for NYCFC’s June 18th match against the Philadelphia Union. All three matches are home fixtures.

Matarrita joins Real Madrid’s Keylor Navas, Arsenal’s Joel Campbell and Sporting Lisbon’s Bryan Ruiz on the Copa roster. Costa Rica play’s in USA’s Group A, which also includes Paraguay and Colombia.
