NYCFC’s David Villa exits final World Cup match with winning goal, tears

The last few months have been transformational for Spanish international superstar David Villa, and Monday’s match against Australia was the end of yet another vital chapter in his storied career.

Villa earned a start for La Furia and did what he always does; score — with a touch of class. The future New York City F.C. man sent in a brilliant back heel past keeper Matthew Ryan, putting Spain ahead and setting the tone for a dominant 3-0 victory over Australia.

He was inexplicably subbed out in the 57th minute for another eventual goalscorer, Juan Mata. As he did, he left the pitch in tears knowing this would be his final World Cup appearance.

Life goes on for Villa, and new adventures await Spain’s all-time leading goal scorer. After a short summer recess, Villa will join Melbourne City of the A-League on loan as a “guest player” before heading back to New York City in late January for preseason training with his new club.
