NYRB II Downs Wilmington to Remain Undefeated

The fortunes of the New York Red Bulls first team and reserves couldn’t be more different.

New York Red Bull II handed the Wilmington Hammerheads a home loss at Legion Field on Friday night by a final score of 1-0, increasing their unbeaten streak to four. The only goal came in the 59th minute when a beautifully placed cross found the head of Stefano Bonomo. The ball was saved by Hammerheads keeper Smits but Dan Metzger scored on the rebound keeping New York undefeated in the USL in 2016.

The first half was back and forth with Wilmington having spells of success on a rather unmanageable field. Football and lacrosse lines covered the artificial turf, marring a match that was already difficult to establish a rhythm.

Rafael Diaz started his first game for New York in goal for the injured Ryan Meara, making several big saves as New York’s defense bent but never broke under Wilmington’s pressure.

The second half saw New York establish a bit more dominance in the game. Derrick Etienne, who had a chippy game, finally produced the pass that led to the game’s only goal in the 59th minute. A cross from the side of the 18-yard box led to a near perfect header from Stefano Bonomo but Wilmington goalkeeper Smits was up to the task. Dan Metzger was left unmarked and placed the ball into the back of the net for the game winner.

Controversy surrounded the end of the game in stoppage time as Perone appeared to equalize the game when he put the ball in the back of the net after a collision with Rafael Diaz. The referee called a foul, reversing the goal-scoring play and sending the home side unhappy.

New York remains undefeated but still sit in second place one point behind Louisville City FC. Next Sunday NYRB II hopes to remain undefeated as they play the Charlotte Independence at Red Bull Arena.
