Brandon Allen’s lone goal early in the first half was the difference as New York Red Bull II beat Bethlehem Steel FC 1-0. With the result, NYRBII improve to 5-0 on the road in 2016 and extend their winning streak to three games.

New York is now tied with Louisville City FC for the lead in the Eastern Conference.

New York’s defense continued to be the story as Bethlehem Steel FC tested them in stunning fashion, peppering Ryan Meara with several shots — especially in the second half. Surviving the onslaught, NYRBII still managed to earn their sixth shutout of the season — and their second against the Steel.

New York jumped out to an advantage early when Gideon Baah played a long ball to Brandon Allen who scored his fourth goal of the season just five minutes into the game. From there, the game was back and forth with Bethlehem Steel getting more than their fair share of opportunities at an equalizer.

Ryan Meara was up to the task with a particularly impressive save off of Derrick Jones who took a hard shot at the top of the box, sending Meara into a sprawling save. The action continued back and forth with New York being particularly impressive with long ball passes. However, they couldn’t find another goal and went into the half with just a 1-0 lead.

The second half saw Bethlehem Steel continue their pressure and test New York’s defense. A major thunderstorm delay kept the teams off of the field for nearly an hour and a half but upon their return, the teams went back and forth with a fantastic opportunity shunned by goalkeeper Samir Badr on Derrick Etienne.

Only a minute later, substitute Fred for Steel FC nearly equalized with a shot that rang off the crossbar.

Next up, New York will return home for a midweek game against the Harrisburg City Islanders. The quick turnaround may see the lineup shift somewhat and it will be interesting to see what MLS players may be loaned down for the game.
