New York Red Bull II continued to fill out its roster ahead of Saturday’s opening game, against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, by adding Andrew Lombard and David Abidor. Both are defenders and could team with Aaron Long on the first team.

“I’ve known Andrew since he was with our U13 team back in the academy and I take special privilege in him being able to begin his professional career with us,” Coach John Wolyniec said. “I’m real excited to see how far Andrew can take his talents with the group. It’s great to see him move on from the academy to Red Bull II.”

Lombard is a native of Montclair, N.J., and played in college at Ohio State and Northeastern University. Lombard started with the Red Bulls’ academy and will play his first professional game with the USL team.

Abidor, 24, has experience on the USL level with the Tulsa Roughnecks. He was a 2015 MLS draft pick by Real Salt Lake, but moved to Europe without playing an MLS game. Last season he played in 26 games for the Roughnecks, making him accustomed to the rigors of the USL schedule.

“We’re excited to have David on the team,” Wolyniec said. “We got to watch a lot of him last year with Tulsa and we like David as an individual and as a player. He is going to fit right in really well here. He’s a hard worker, an intelligent player and a guy that can help us defensively and maybe even in the midfield as well.”
