Official: NYCFC acquire Shay Facey on loan, sign Alvarez

NEW YORK – New York City FC is putting the finishing touches to their roster, announcing the long-assumed loan deal of Manchester City youth product Shay Facey and veteran Spanish talent, Pablo Alvarez.

“It’s great for the Club to have added Shay to our ranks,” head coach Jason Kreis said in a club statement. “He’s fit in well during pre-season on and off the pitch and his defensive talents will add depth and quality to the back line. Shay is also a versatile defender that can play in numerous positions across the defense. I’m confident he will bring a lot to this roster.

“Pablo has integrated well with the squad over the course of the preseason,” he adds.  “His experience will add an important veteran presence to the team both on and off the field. We have worked hard to build a team with a balance of youth and experience and that should serve us well as we head into the season.”

Shay, 22, comes to New York on a six month loan, ending June 30th.  The 5’9″ English youth international is a versatile defender, capable of playing both center back and fullback.  He is also a key member Manchester City’s youth academy, captaining their U-20 side.

“It’s really exciting for me to be joining New York City FC as we begin our historic, inaugural season. The squad and coaches have been fantastic throughout training camps, and I’m happy to be part of something so special,” Facey said. “It been a fantastic experience. The initial idea was just to train with the team for pre-season, but I’ve really enjoyed working with the group and am now very much looking forward to the start of the season. What’s happening at this club is exciting for a player and it’s something we talk about as a group. ”

Alvarez, 34, is a La Liga veteran — and close associate of Spanish striker and NYCFC superstar, David Villa.  A midfielder by trade, Alvarez enjoyed his best years at Sporting Gijon, where he scored 25 goals in 160 appearances.

“I couldn’t be happier about officially signing with New York City FC ahead of our historic inaugural season,” Alvarez said.  “I have trained hard with the team over the preseason, and will continue to work hard to give this team everything I can.  I am particularly excited to play in front of our fans at the iconic Yankee Stadium.”
