Official: U.S. Soccer Announces MAPFRE Stadium Will Host WCQ vs. Guatemala

If ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

That’s the motto that the United States Soccer Federation followed in the decision to put next March’s World Cup Qualifier against Guatemala at MAPFRE Stadium in Columbus, Ohio.

The match marks a return to America’s first modern soccer-specific stadium for the United States Men’s National Team since last year’s 2-0 victory over Mexico to clinch World Cup Qualification. All time, the Stars and Stripes have an impressive 7-0-3 mark at the venue.

While Guatemala may not have the same contingent of traveling fans that Mexico does, the true home field advantage fostered in Columbus is second to none. In fact, the venue has been a popular choice for both the men and women’s national teams having hosted 16 total matches.

This matchup with Guatemala is crucial in the World Cup Qualification process, as a result will surely put the United States into the Hexagonal. The Hex, as it is commonly called, features the top two teams from each of the three groups from the Fourth Round of qualifying.

Currently the United States is tied at the top of Group C with Trinidad and Tobago at four points.

U.S. Soccer also announced that the match will be televised on both ESPN2 and UniMas.
