After being prematurely introduced by his new club’s CEO, Jefferson Mena has officially joined Barcelona S.C. on loan from New York City FC.
Mena had already landed in Ecuador despite the two clubs not finalizing the loan agreement. He will be with Barcelona for 2017 with the club holding a purchase option. Mena made 23 appearances with NYCFC after joining the club midway through the 2015 season. His contract with NYCFC is set to expire at the end of 2017.
“Everyone at NYCFC would like to wish Jefferson all the very best for his loan spell in Ecuador,” sporting director Claudio Reyna said. “He is a dedicated professional who played his part in our run to the Playoffs last season and I’m sure he will play a big role for Barcelona in their 2017 campaign.”
Mena’s loan opens up an international slot for City. They have nine for 2017, eight allocated by MLS and an additional spot acquired in the Patrick Mullins trade. City remain in discussions with Panamanian attacking midfielder Miguel Camargo for a possible loan or transfer.
