After spending a whole summer filled with uncertainty and transfer rumors, United States International DeAndre Yedlin has finally found a home, joining English Championship side Newcastle United.

DeAndre Yedlin, who joined Tottenham Hotspur in 2015, officially announced his move to the Tyneside club earlier this afternoon, signing a lengthy five-year-deal with the team. According to multiple sources, the transfer fee for the Seattle native is estimated to be around £5 million or $6.6 million.

After spending most of 2015/16 Premier League campaign playing for Newcastle‘s fierce-rivals, Sunderland AFC, the 23-year-old American caught the eyes of many European teams, including Aston Villa and Trabzonspor. However, it was Newcastle who was able to snatch up the former Spurs defender for a generous fee.

Upon joining the club, DeAndre Yedlin spoke about how excited he was to join such a historic club: “Newcastle is such a big and historic club, and I’m excited to have the honor of playing for them. Hopefully, I can do great things here.” He continued, “I’m excited to learn under Rafa Benitez as well. He has an amazing resume and I know he will help improve me a lot. I can’t wait to get started.”

Yedlin’s new manager and former Real Madrid head coach, Rafa Benitez, commented on the club’s signing, explaining why he signed the American:  “We have known for a little while of Watford’s interest in Daryl Janmaat, so it was important for us to bring in a replacement immediately. He continued, “In DeAndre we have a player who knows English football well. He has good experience, an attacking mentality, ability and great pace. I think he can do really well for us and will give us good competition on the right.”

According to ESPNFC, Sunderland missed out on the deal to sign Yedlin because they were unwilling to accept Tottenham’s asking price.

Yedlin originally joined Tottenham after spending six years with the Seattle Sounders youth and senior teams. The 23-year-old appeared in 56 matches the Sounders before signing a deal to join the Hotspurs in the summer of 2015. Upon joining Spurs, Yedlin briefly appeared in the first team, electing to join to Sunderland AFC on loan. While with the Black Cats, the Seattle native made 23 impressive performances, gaining himself notoriety in the league. After his successful stint under now-England manager Sam Allardyce, the Akron alumni elected to join Sunderland’s rivals, Newcastle United.

In addition to Yedlin’s successful club career, the right back has made huge waves in the International department. Since making his debut for Jurgen Klinsmann‘s side in 2014, the defender has made an outrageous 39 appearances, making himself a pivotal part of the United States’ defense.
