The first taste of fall weather for the New York Cosmos was not a pleasant one — and neither was the experience of playing the Fall Season leaders, Ottawa Fury FC.

The Fury came to town and dealt the Cosmos a shocking 4-1 defeat — New York’s first home loss since August of last year. Paulo Jr.’s brace led the way for Ottawa, as a Tom Heinemann goal and Mendes own goal put the visiting Fury far ahead of the Cosmos. Andres Flores scored the lone Cosmos goal.

The Cosmos got a dose of exactly what has made the Fury one of the most formidable teams in the NASL in the first half. New York was free to possess the ball as much as they wanted in the opening stages, but Ottawa never faltered defensively when the Cosmos attempted to charge into the final third. The best the home side could manage in the first half was a 20-yard shot from Gaston Cellerino in the 4th minute that an Ottawa defender easily blocked.

As has been the case in most of Ottawa’s matches this year, the physicality picked up as the half wore on and the Cosmos grew increasingly frustrated with the referee’s unwillingness to blow the whistle on the visitors for any of their infractions.

The frustration boiled over in the 30th minute when Marcos Senna was booked for a severely late tackle at midfield when Ottawa was enjoying one its rare spouts of possession. The ensuing free kick proved deadly as Richie Ryan chipped the ball to the left side of the six-yard box where Colin Falvey was waiting to head it across goal. Attacker Paulo Junior quickly swooped in to rifle the ball into the net on the games first shot on goal.

The Cosmos irritation only grew after the goal, and was likely intensified by their failure to connect with each other in the final third. The team with the most shots in the NASL was forced to enter halftime with no shots on goal in the first 45 minutes.

New York was finally able to channel their grievances into some positive play less than two minutes into the second half. Ayoze delivered a stunning cross from the left flank that found a leaping Andres Flores in the center of the box. The midfielder’s head rose to meet the ball & redirected it into the net.

The focus and energy from the Cosmos seemed to drastically improve in the second half. Flores nearly grabbed the lead only a few minutes later when he fired off shot from just inside the left side of the box that Romuald Peiser deftly parried away.

Ottawa responded well in the face of the Cosmos early onslaught and grabbed the lead again in the 56th minute through Paulo Junior’s second goal, powering a ball over the head of keeper Jimmy Maurer from a tight angle.

Peiser came up huge for his side again on a couple sequences. The keeper spread out to save a booming shot from Raul just outside the box and came off his line to snuff out a clear chance on goal from Leo Fernades.

The final blows to the Cosmos night came in quick succession in the 77th and 78th minutes. The visitors were gifted a three-on-one break that culminated with an own goal from captain Carlos Mendes while attempting to block the shot. One minute later, Ottawa showed no mercy, promptly finding the back of the net again when Sinisa Ubiparipovic sprung Tim Heinemann behind the back line and the forward made the easy conversion.

After jumping out to the three goal lead, the visitors never seemed in danger of conceding again. The late-game heroics that the Cosmos have shown this year were nullified by the tight lines of the stingiest defense in the league.

The loss leaves the Cosmos eight points back of the Ottawa in the Fall Season standing, leaving the New York’s chances at that title very slim. More importantly, though, the defeat means that the Cosmos only hold a narrow one point lead in the combined standings. Should Ottawa overtake them in the combined table, the Cosmos would lose out on the number one overall seed in the postseason.

  • Pirlo Wonder Pass

Two own goals! LOL! That attendance, Cosmos meaning nothing to New Yorkers! LOL! Date of team folding–2017? 2018? 2019? LOL!

    • the Realist

You can always count on NYCFC fans for analytical thoughts and well written posts

    • Larry’s A Simpleton

They’re gone in 2016 bro. It’s all set. Sometime after the new year Stover is going to make the announcement this farce is moving from the college lacrosse stadium to Hartford CT. I have a friend who has inside info.

Hofstra regrets ever getting involved with f.cosmos. Even though shuart is a ghost town, the skanky idiots that do show up pollute the campus and hofstra wants the out. BEIN is tired of losing money hand over fist and cant wait to unload this money pit.

This is all a well known fact in the f.cosmos and nasl offices. the deal is signed sealed and delivered. by this time next year stover will be getting claudio reyna his coffee. fact

      • Larry’s A Simpleton

Sela is tired of losing money to.. I still feel the effects of that tasering

      • Anonymous

2016 sounds a bit early, but otherwise I hear ya

        • Larry’s A Simpleton

its a done deal man. hofstra wants them out in the worse way because of the slobs that show up and trash the campus and sela sport wants to stop the bleeding.

they get 2000 per game now. what do you think its going to be like next year with raul and senna both gone? sela feels theyll its a better investment to get them in connecticut.

its ok if you dont believe me, but im telling you its common knowledge among the insiders out there in nassau county.

  • Smith

The Cosmos can’t have Raul and Senna on the field at thr same time. Too slow on the counter and unable to penetrate good defenses.

  • OpenCupFan

I think the problem may be Gio. There, it’s been said.

    • Smith

      How do you figure that?

      • OpenCupFan

Well, I’m not 100% sure, but the reason that needs to be said is that every teams employs more or less the same tactic against the Cosmos and it is up to him to adjust for it. It seems that despite the criticisms of players, it is the players and their last minute heroics that pull these games out – at the last minute. That’s ok sometimes, but if you’re relying on that all the time then there is a problem with tactics – at least that’s how seems. Would love to hear your impression. Last minute heroics goes back to game in HongKong too.
        .
Similar thing last year, except didn’t have the last minute heroics as frequently. Also, top to bottom arguably best line-up in NASL. When that is the case and you’re losing and frequently getting ties then you’re probably getting out coached. Again, I’m not 100% sure, but started feeling this way last year and this year’s loss to NJRB got me thinking it again.

    • Jordy

Just keep destroying your credibility, please.

      • OpenCupFan

What does credibly have to do with this website?

  • Kevin

That god Larry came back with his nonsense from his inside source. Hartford is already working on a team for the NASL, they are already playing as an indoor team to establish themselves before they move outside. Good try though from your source. ANother idiot comment by you. But congratulations, your team is in 88th place in MLS but still will make it to the playoffs.

    • Larry’s A Simpleton

yes hartford is already working on a team and its the f.cosmos. all though its my understanding they’re going to change the name because the fans in connecticut arent that stupid to buy into that fake cosmos farce theyve been pushing. announcement sometime in early january.

dont believe me? ask leo. he’s an insider and im sure has all the info.

you mad bro? newyork has spoken. nycfc gets 30000 per game and 20000 season ticket holders while the f.cosmos die a slow death out there in nassau county and soon to be connecticut. and losers like you still pretend the **** they serve up in the nasl is somehow relavant.

      • Anonymous

I’m not supporting if they’re not called The Whalers

        • Larry’s A Simpleton

but if they call themselves the whalers the can play that cool music when they take the pitch

  • William

well there u go larry your sign on name fits effin moron

    • Larry’s A Simpleton

boo hoo hoo billy boy. wave bye bye to the nassau county cosmos. the vans are backing up in shuart stadium right now.

  • William

Problem isn’t Gio – the Cosmos were somewhat undisciplined in the second half as they were frustrated with how the Fury clog the middle up. and as part of that frustration the D overcommitted to the attack leaving them very vulnerable on the backend. This mindset was carried over from the first half as they controlled play and had most of the possession time.

they should be packing u up for cremore there is a pink room waiting for u to match your pink heels hahahaahhahahahaahaha

    • Larry’s A Simpleton

and yet these jr boys are more popular than the make believe cosmos out there in nassau county. poor willy. cant face reality that nobody gives a **** about the f.cosmos.

  • William

that whole franchise is make believe and total fabrication and the morons who follow and embrace them and it are sheep can u say bbaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • William

how did it feel on 6/17/15 at about 10:30 ? do u remember ? how did it feel cmon ? be honest ? go ahead I am waiting

    • Larry’s A Simpleton

congrats to the cosmos for beating nycfc. the f.cosmos players must have been real nervous seeing all those people in the stands vs the empty stadium they in in night after night.

you going to make the drive up to hartford next year?

  • DanGerman

The team needs to get out LI, I can almost guarantee you this game would not have happened on a Tuesday if the Cosmos had any say. The crowd was terrible but not unexpected for a game played on a Tuesday. Hopefully the team moves to MCU in Coney Island next year because Hofstra is absolutely killing the Cosmos.

    • Larry’s A Simpleton

why cant the world famous f.cosmos draw bigger crowds? Tuesday night??? is that the lame excuse the f.cosmos fanboys use? a crappy team like nycfc drew close to 30000 the other wednesday night.

They’re not getting bigger crowds in brooklyn either. they got 4000 the one time they played at mcu and over half the people walked out at halftime they were so bored.

      • DanGerman

It’s WAAAY easier to get to Yankee Stadium on a weekday then Hempstead. Moving to a site that’s near a subway will go a long way to helping attendance.

        • William

but also the team has been relaunched after 30 years of dormancy and they have only been playing for 2 1/2 years. That being said is there a RR stop at Belmont currently ?

          • Larry’s A Simpleton

relauncehed? nope. all the fanboys will tell you its the same team from the 70’s. try again

            • William

who ? I go to every game since August 2013 and talked to many many people there like everyone and no one talks like that – it has its great history no one can deny it but its a different time different players different landscape different demographics and different business model.

              • Larry’s A Simpleton

lol. ask any of the cosmos fanboys like open cup fan, onionsuck and any of the other idiots on big soccer and other web pages. there isnt a fanboy who doesn’t get his panties in a knot when you tell them the farce in nassau county has nothing to do with the cosmos of the 70’s.

                • William

right so ? whats your point ? you are generalizing all fans aren’t the same as all people aren’t that same – to paint all Cosmos fans as that is quite ignorant on your part. take a bow ! They have had some great crowds on LI and some bad crowds on LI so ? are u writing a book on the Cosmos ? what is this a game of GOTCHA ? u r a DRONE !!! grow up.

    • Completely agree Dan.

      • Larry’s A Simpleton

serious question leo. you lead the fight to get everyone to believe the cosmos are the one true authentic football team in nyc. your’re one of the guys who keep screaming that this cosmos team is the same from the 70’s.

so if the cosmos are the team with all the glory, history, championships, world wide fame and authetic fans why cant they draw? Week night games out in nassau county shouldnt mean **** to a world famous team like the cosmos. shuart stadium should be overflowing, but its a ghost town. why?????

        • William

right they were the original team and spent 30 years not playing thus have to rebuild a fanbase in a very competitive market in a stadium that isn’t theirs thus not many show up see how easy Larreeeeeeeee ?

now climb back into the dumpster.

        • Serious question Larry, why do you spend so much time commenting on Cosmos stories if you don’t care about them? This is a story about a particular game.

I don’t lead stupid fights about which is an authentic team. You can characterize it however you want. These are the facts:
          1. The Cosmos played soccer in the NY metro area starting in 1971. The team folded and the Cosmos property was taken over and owned by Pepe Pinton. That property was sold and resulted in the current Cosmos team. It is a soccer team that represents nothing other than what it is, a 44 year old New York soccer team.

          2. Red Bull NY is a marketing scheme to sell cans of soda. If it wasn’t the team would not be named Red Bull. They would be Metrostars with Red Bull sponsorship. I invite you to check out Red Bull’s web site, they explain it all.

          3. NYCFC is a soccer team designed to serve the interests of the parent soccer club, Manchester City. Sheik Mansour did not buy this team so that it can be an independent club, he bought an MLS franchise to serve multiple purposes for the Manchester parent.

Why don’t many people go to Cosmos games? I don’t know the answer to that question. Why do more people go to Katy Perry and Taylor Swift concerts than Sleater-Kinney? Why do people spend more money going to Disneyland than traveling the world? I don’t know. Since you’re a fan of the Katy Perry of soccer, maybe you can tell me.

          • John

The reason is simple why no one goes to cosmo games. It’s minor league and people don’t go see minor league sports in NY.

Nassau county has 1.4 million people how is it possible that the cosmos can’t draw 10,000 people to a game.

Poor marketing, no brand recognition, no interest in minor leagues soccer these are the real factors why no one knows the cosmos exist.

            • Well it looks like we won’t be minor league forever.

              • Otherwise, I don’t disagree with you. The only thing we do is play better soccer, but that’s not enough.

                • MTF

The Cosmos play attractive soccer and I agree that they’d be a bottom third to middle of the pack team in MLS. However, they don’t play better soccer than the current Red Bulls team. The Red Bulls beat them handily this year, and I have no reason to doubt that if they’d met a few more time this year the outcome would be the same. NYCFC has been a mess…but even they seem to be gelling (although they need to start a youth movement in a year or so after Pirlo and Lampard retire).

              • John

Yes it will NASL will be relegated to Division 2 for the foreseeable future. The US soccer federation will make it impossible for the NASL to get division 1 status. THe NASAL fist needs to worry about having a full league from coast to coast that have viable stadiums to play in , not just minor league stadiums like the Cosmos, FtLuaderdale, tampa and the rest of the stadiums, they also need to get a major TV deal and Radio.

Atlanta, Minnesota and Carolina will no longer be in the NASL in 2 years how do you replace those teams?

There is no coverage at all of the NASL on local newspapers, TV, radio until all that happens how can the NASL be Division 1?

                • William

yea we know we know most of the teams in the NASL are only a couple of years old yes we get it u guy are like a broken record. Stacking the deck against the Cosmos and the league to prove your end point great now does that ego feel better now ?

                  • John

                    Sorry just stating reality.

                    • William

reality for now – but things have a way of changing over time nothing is forever.

                • As I have been saying for over a year, the anti-trust suit is on its way. Now we’re two steps closer, with negotiations between NASL and the USSF under way. I don’t think it will happen overnight, nor do I think it should. But the USSF is on warning, they can’t protect MLS’s division 1 status.

PS The cosmos are covered in El Diario for every game.

                  • William

                    I agree completely

                  • John

Any anti-trust law suits will take many years, so until a suit is filed there is nothing to talk about.

Also NASL will need to meet the current requirement that the USSF has to be considered for Division 1 and again the NASL is a long way from even meeting those requirements.

If the USSF changes the requirements as have been proposed the NASL will never meet the requirements.

The NASL might be out of business in 5 years if things continue the way they are going now. Very difficult to operate in the current environment , look at the poor attendance through out the league and with no TV,radio contracts and no major sponsors it is going to be a tough time.

Its good that a spanish newspaper is covering the Cosmos.

                    • William

but if NASL forces the USSF to change the requirements so the NASL would meet these new requirements instead of going to court ?

                    • Yes, spanish language newspapers count, right?

The USSF/MLS position that MLS will never lose its exclusive Div 1 status (Sunil has referred to it as an “expropriation of assets”) is a major barrier to investment in the league. I think the Div 1 application that NASL submitted in January, in addition to the hiring of Kessler, is the reason NASL is still attracting investment despite the bad news (Traffic, Minn, Atlanta, etc.)

There is no doubt that NASL is in a tough environment. But despite the Cosmos paltry attendance numbers, attendance is up around the league. If they can tell investors that they will make a serious run at Div. 1 in say 5 years, I think they will survive and grow. I can tell you from personal knowledge that there are real numbers being thrown around to resurrect the Chicago Sting.

                  • Anonymous

Hear any hopeful chatter in Cosmos circles about Platini holding USSF to pro/rel?

                    • That seems to be in play, but no one really knows, as far as I know.

              • MTF

                Please expand.

boy u r a really really dumb Simpleton larreeeeeeeeeeeeeee do u want me to educate u or do u want to be stuck in your moronic self for the rest of your pathetic existence ?

  • William

and ummm stop projecting Larreeeeeeeeeeeeee u sound like some chick who cant find the right heels to wear drama queen

  • William

and why do u care so much what the Cosmos are doing anyhow ? whats your concern ?

  • William

please don’t tell me about NYCFC attendance everyone knows it has been inflated by at least 20% – 40%. umm I got the inside info on that from someone who works for the MLS offices. Larreeeeeeeeeeeeee

    • Larry’s A Simpleton

lol. i must of struck a nerve there billy boy. sorry doosh, unlike the f.cosmos the numbers at yankee stadium are real. every seat available in the lower part of the stadium is full. unlike all those 1000s of empty seats at the lacrosse stadium.

billy boy foaming at the mouth! priceless!

      • William

lie upon lie upon lie Larry u r a delusional character. Nerve hardly I just like to check people like u. U need to be countered.

        • Larry’s A Simpleton

delusional lol. man you’re nothing but comic relief. just like that farce of a team you follow. notice leo or dave martinez dont deny anythng ive said about connnecticut.

          • William

            actually I don’t notice cause I don’t care

          • William

that farce of a team beat your team. Memba ?

    • DanGerman

Sorry Will, I’m a season ticket holder and there’s nothing inflated about those attendance numbers. Those numbers are the real deal, but its mostly due to marketing the team as NYC’s team(which it is but its not the only one) and the easy access to games. Again you put the Cosmos near a subway and you’re almost certain to get a bigger crowd.

      • William

then why are a lot saying they are inflated I have heard this a lot but ok. As the MLS has to show this to be more of a success than it really is ? But if its real then good for NYCFC.

        • DanGerman

When did I say that? I just said they had a terribly attended game (little over 3K), which it is but its not unexpected due to the date and time. Unless you’re saying 3k is great which I have to disagree with.

          • William

no not at all its not good.

      • Larry’s A Simpleton

why couldnt they draw in brooklyn?

Like the Cosmos, Ottawa is a strong, well-coached team. Paulo Jr., Ubiparapovic and Heinemann were impactful and the Fury’s backline is solid. The Cosmos need to do a better job of marking Paulo Jr., Ubiparapovic and Heinemann (not easy). Would like to see how the Cosmos do against Ottawa with Rovérsio and Moffat on the field.

    • William

I agree 110% with all of that

  • REAL OpenCupFans know nasl teams are bad

    These are the facts:

-cos-shmos are owned by dirty middle east oil money
-they are a minor league team with no real connection to the original cosmos
-key people and companies in the nasl have been criminally indicted (traffic sports were owners of multiple teams and still hold control of league and 1 team)
-the nasl is minor league in every way – they lost 7 straight games to USL teams and any good teams will be promoted up to MLS like MN, Indy, San Antonio – the rest will fold or join USL
-the cos-shmos play at a college turf lacrosse field in front of 2000 fans, not much different then a high school football game, that is about their level

  • William

oh another jerkoff enters the convo

I always preferred “Jagoff”, but your point stands

  • 1. sela sport is not in the oil business
    2. The Cosmos from the 70s teams I was sitting with last night think this team is a continuation of the original. I’ll take their word over yours.
    3. Traffic was criminally indicted, that is bad but they were immediately dropped from the Board.
    4. NASL has won about 45% of their games against MLS opponents over the last three years.
    5. We play in a **** stadium in front of not enough people. Hoopefully that will change with the governor’s signature.

  • OpenCupFan

You know, I have yet to hear of one illegal thing Traffic ever did to benefit NASL.
    .
    Would love to hear one.

    • Traffic hasn’t done anything illegal to the benefit of NASL, but it is nevertheless a negative to have them around. As the FIFA investigations drag on, I hope that fans of MLS are just as willing to stand up and be counted if one of there’s is entangled as the fans of the Carolina Railhawks and Bill Peterson have been in standing up to Traffic.

    • I’ll bet that some of the morons on here will be just as moronic if and when that happens.

  • William

for some reason for a team that’s folding, that has horrible attendance that no one cares about and gets no coverage has the most comments that’s all the other boards combined. Explainations from the keyboard Kings of Soccer ????????????????????????????????????

    • Not to mention 3 of the top 5 most popular articles on this site are about Cosmos/NASL. Whatever.

      • William

getting back to the game – the Fury are a problem – I sit with people that have dismissed this team previously and the Cosmos will walk away with the title. Although that being said it was a lot closer than the 4-1 score indicates.

      • slowleftarm

Yeah because you spam Cosmos articles looking for clients and fans of the major teams in this area have to constantly remind you guys that you play minor league games with MLS rejects in a college lacrosse stadium.

They are way to exposed on the backend without Reversio – he is key

they will be tough to beat with a backline of : Freeman, Ayoze, Mendes and Reversio.

  • William

ahhh another team in the NASL that could beat NYCFC and The Metrostars –

    THE FURY

  • Forget Roversio, I think his days with the Cosmos are done. Too many injuries. Caceres is a disappointment. It’s a real problem.

    • William

yes Caceres wasn’t good last nite at all saw him and Carlos get into it a couple of times.

  • Ottawa is certainly better than NYCFC.

    • John

Stop NYCFC would crush Ottawa , a bunch of scrubs play at Ottawa.

      • William

nasl teams were 0-7 vs USL teams, that is a winning percentage of 0 – just the facts:

tell me about it but the Harrison Metrostar fans and the the NYC Chumps must remember and keep in mind the word AUTHENTIC !!!!!!

The sign in Green and White that was streamed across the 5 Points cheering section when the Cosmos came onto the field in the NYCFC Open Cup game

its a simple word apparently most here don’t know the meaning.

  • REAL OpenCupFans know nasl teams are bad

you can’t be authentic if you play on a college turf lacrosse field in front of 3000 fans in long island, and are backed by middle east dirty oil money, in a league run by indicted criminals.
