Outlaws Overseas: Pulisic, O’Neil, Johnson lead USMNT-ers abroad

It was a good weekend to be an American abroad.

Huge performances in Germany from Christian Pulisic and Fabian Johnson highlight the weekend’s major American successes in the soccer world.

Christian Pulisic (BVB Dortmund): Upon returning to Dortmund after making history with the United States Men’s National Team, 18-year-old midfielder Christian Pulisic has continued to make waves in Germany, picking up two assists and a goal in Dortmund’s weekend match against weaker opposition Darmstadt. What better way for Pulisic to celebrate his birthday weekend?

Shane O’Neill (NAC Breda): After leaving the Colorado Rapids last year to find a club in Europe, 23-year-old defender Shane O’Neill has bounced around from team to team looking for an opportunity. Although most chances proved fruitless, the Rapids’ Academy Product has made an impact for new club NAC Breda in the Netherlands. Subbing in late into the match to help give the Dutch side a slight advantage in height, the 6’2″ center back headed home a cross into the back of the net, giving Breda the match-winning goal.

Royal-Dominique Fennell (Hallescher FC): 27-year-old California native Royal-Dominique Fennell scored the match-tying goal late Saturday night for his 3. Liga club, Hallescher FC, who currently compete in the third division of Germany. The former United States U23 participant has impressed with his new side, potentially giving the German club hope to earn promotion into 2. Bundesliga.

Fabian Johnson (Borussia Monchengladbach): Although teammate Thorgan Hazard took the headlines over the weekend, United States midfielder/defender Fabian Johnson also played an integral role in Borussia’s win. Recording one assist, Johnson helped build up Borussia’s attack, becoming a major part to Monchengladbach’s impressive 4-1 win over Werder Bremen.

Under The Radar:

Daniel Williams (Reading FC): Although Danny Williams was unable to record a goal or an assist in Reading’s 2-1 weekend win against Barnsley, the 27-year-old continued to prove his dominance on the field as a leader for the English club. Completing impressive passes and enforcing strong tackles, the United States International deserves plaudits from fans across the globe as well as a look from USMNT head coach Jurgen Klinsmann.
