Pele, Cosmos legends to be honored at inaugural match

After nearly 30 years of obscurity, the New York Cosmos name continues to be the most highly identifiable soccer brand in North America.

On August 3rd, the Cosmos will honor those men who helped make them a household name.

Legendary players Pelé, Carlos Alberto and Giorgio Chinaglia will be celebrated prior to the team’s opening match against a familiar foe – the Fort Lauderdale Strikers – at Hofstra University’s Shuart Stadium.

“We can never forget the great memories of playing for the Cosmos,” says Pelé, the team’s Honorary President. “It’s good to have the team back, and to involve my friend and captain Carlos Alberto along with the family of Giorgio Chinaglia.”

The two Brazilian luminaries will be joined by family members of the late Chinaglia who past April 1st of last year, including his son George who is the founder of the Giorgio Chinaglia Foundation.

“Myself and my family are deeply thankful to the Cosmos for honoring our father,” George Chinaglia said. “He absolutely loved his time in New York, from the fans to his teammates, and would certainly be thrilled about the team’s return on Aug. 3. To be a part of it is truly special for us.”

Leading up to the match, Pelé will take part in the lighting of the Empire State Building which will glow green in honor of the Cosmos. Meanwhile, all three parties will also take part in a a charity gala to benefit the team’s charitable partner HELP USA – a housing and supportive services network for the homeless and struggling.
