Pellegrini on Lampard loan extension: “Frank wants to stay”

Just prior to Manchester City’s encounter against Leicester, club boss Manuel Pellegrini publicly declared his desire to see New York City FC loanee Frank Lampard extend his stay in London.

According to the Chilean manager, the feeling is mutual.

“Frank wants to stay, we want to keep him,” Pellegrini told reporters after their 1-0 victory at Leicester. “Now we must resolve the problem with New York City and the MLS.”

With Sergio Aguero and Stevan Jovetic out, and Edin Dzeko picking up a knock in training prior to the match, it would be Lampard to play hero once more, netting a crafty game winner to award City three valuable road points. The goal was Lampard’s sixth of the season; an impressive tally for a player once looked upon as surplus to goods.

NYCFC Director of Football Claudio Reyna was on hand for the match, continuing discussions with Manchester City brass over the possibility of a loan extension. Pellegrini has publicly stated his desire to have Lampard through the rest of the Premier League campaign (May). If Reyna is to be taken at face value, NYCFC have almost certainly conceded Lampard for the preseason to Manchester to buoy their mother club through UEFA action — and the expected call-up of Yaya Toure to the African Cup of Nations.

“Great players adjust and get to know each other really quick,” Reyna said of Lampard’s potential absence this preseason. “I don’t think it would be a huge disadvantage if he is not here from day one [preseason].”

A decision is expected to come this month.

“The decision about Frank can have nothing to do with the injuries,” Pellegrini said. “Dzeko could be fit and Aguero and it would be the decision of Lampard. He will not stay with us because we have injured strikers. He’ll stay with us because he us a very important player.”

  • I honestly don’t know how someone can be a fan of this insult to New York City.

No one should be surprised, even the head in the sand NYCFC supporters, you can’t hide who you are…this is a farm team and a way to get huge wage players like Lampard on MCFC without reflecting those wages on their FFP books. When will they start believing us instead of accusing us of being haters…no one is making **** up…this is the hard clod truth about NYCFC project.
